Mark searched words

Post by timmorn »

Hello,

i must read a lot of papers and one function in the pdf reader okular makes it much faster: You are able to type in a word you search for and the reader marks all this words in the document. I often prefer this to normal search. Wouldn't it be possible to make a search option "mark found" or so on?

Thanks

timmorn,

You can use the search window (Ctrl + Shift + F) and it will find all occurrences of the term you need inline of their content and when you click any of them it highlights the term in the document (and only this one) so it's both easy to locate it in the main file and also allows you to browse through all occurrences on the same place.

My personal opinion is that if you search for a common term the document will get overcrowded with all the occurences of it.

So it is not possible exactly the way you described it but please try the way we have implemented it and I hope you will like it.

Regards,
Stefan

I know this option and you are right: It is perfect for searching. But this little feature what i would wish has a little other function. I try to explain it better:

When i read a paper i am often not interested in the whole paper, but for example in a special method they used. Then i prefer, that a special word, what i type in is marked in the whole paper, because when i scroll through the sides i see much faster, if this is really what i am searching for, because i see the word in context with the graphics and headers near it. Too i see much faster, if this is the passage i searched for, because this word is highlighted there more then once. When i search the way you told me, i always see only one word and so i can't make me a picture of the arrangement of this search word.

I think at all, that this is a very simple little feature, because all what is needed for this is already implemented and for people like me, which must study 100 papers in a hard day of work, this is really an improvement.

Hey timmorn,

Yes your point is clear now. I will have the project manager check this request, but can not promise it would be approved or implemented, as you know there are lots of requests and despite our desire too - we can't suit everyone. All reasonable requests, and your is, are weighted and their usability and need by lots of people have significant importance when determining if a feature will find it's place in the Viewer.

With all the above said it is not impossible to be implemented, but if approved it still might take a few builds before you see such functionality.

Regards,
Stefan

Please, add my vote as well.

I use this kind of feature in Firefox all the time, if I click on "Highlight all", all found terms are highlighted (yellow), and the current term is green. Very useful. Some searching programs also use the same feature with Adobe, when they display pdf internally with all search terms highlighted. For this, one has to set in Adobe "Enable search highlights from external highlight server". It would be great if pdf-xchange viewer could be used by those programs as well.

OK quant,

vote added :) ,

It is the Project Manager's call so we will have to wait for him to approve/deny this feature.

Are there any news to this feature? I miss it every day i work with Xchange viewer. Most of the time i open my document in Xchange and Okular only because of the fact that Okular has (like all new KDE apps) this useful feature. I hope it is soon there because it should be very simple to implement and a great improvement for the users searching there documents for special contents.

Thanks

Cool, thanks! This will improve searching in XChange viewer.

Perhaps you already planed it this way, but if not perhaps you are happy for suggestions: In this type of search i don't want the viewer to jump to an other place of the document if i mark the words. I only want it to highlight them. It is more an acceleration of reading speed with focus on special words than a search.

A cool thing would be also that i can type in more than one word and all typed in words are highlighted then in different colours!

An improvement would be also that for example in the site preview i see on what pages the words are found. (you can find this also in okular)
