OWA attachments do not open in IE8

Post by AnthonyA »

Moved: We are using FREE XChange viewer version 2.0 (Build 41.5)
XP Pro Service Pack 3 with the latest Windows Updates.

In IE8 using Outlook for Web Access, PDF attachments will not open. We get an error that the file could not be found. The path is a Temporary Internet Files path.

The same version works fine in IE7 on a different computer.
Check for Updates in XChange Viewer says we are using the latest version.

I have not installed the update dated 12/31/09

Build 41.5 is fairly old - build 42 was released in June. There seem to be some problems with the "Check for Updates" feature.

There have been some discussions recently about problems with PDF XChange Viewer opening in Internet Explorer. There's a good chance that your bug has been fixed in more recent versions.

Thanks Lewis. I used Group Policy to push the current version. I think I read that the old version should be uninstalled before installing the new version. Should I create a new policy for the new version or change the install file in the current policy?

As a rule for ordinary users, the existing version should be uninstalled first because there is a chance that the user chose a different installation directory during the setup procedure. If you are controlling the installation parameters and can be sure that the setup options have not changed, it is safe to just install the new version. This what I have been told by Tracker support personnel.

I have limited experience using group policies. The interface is rather confusing, not sure if you are actually creating a new policy when you tell it to install a new version of an application.

Thanks, I am new to Group Policy. I found a section in the Policy to designate an Update file. I will try that.

If I remember correctly, that feature is designed for situations where you have to first install a full version of an application, and then apply a patch. For example some updates of Adobe Acrobat have come as a patch file which has to be installed after the base version is installed.

I'm pretty sure this is not what you want here.
