Invalid reference table (xref)

Post by Oxa »

Error opening document. PDF structure [40] Invalid reference table (xref)

I get the above error when trying to open PDF documents on the Web. It appears frequently, but inconsistently. I know the problem lies with PDF-XChange Viewer because I'm unable to open documents that I was able to open in an earlier version of the software. I'm using build 37.2. I'll download the more recent version to see if that affects the problem.

Firstly you should update your viewer to the latest version by checking for updates.

Also we have had a bug with internet explorer viewing which is now fixed and will be in new update that should be available this coming week.

Can you say me a link to the PDF file which causes the problem?

It's not just 1 file; there are a lot of them. Unfortunately, I can't provide a link because they're at a subscription website. Today I successfully accessed all the files using Adobe. I just downloaded 2.0039 and will try it out.

OK. I upgraded to version 2.0039, and that did not help. Now PDF-Xchange doesn't work at all. When opening a pdf file in Firefox, I just get a blank screen. I did install the Firefox plugin. Help!

Please run the viewer and into Preferences (Edit -> Preferences) on the "File Associations" page check the box "Display PDF in Browser".
When you do this, please check if there are files:
1) npPDFXCviewNPPlugin.dll into plugins subfolder of FireFox installation folder
2) PDFXCviewAx.dll into the folder where PDFXCview.exe is.

I reinstalled PDF-Xchange Viewer (2.0039), and no longer get blank pages, but I still get this error message on some files, files that I was previously able to open:

Duh, I already said I can't open the files at a subscription website.
If I can't open them, I can't save them.
If I can't save them, I can't send you a copy.

Just because you cannot open the files in PDF-XChange Viewer does not mean that you cannot download them from the internet, or open them in Adobe Reader, etc.

Are you trying to open them directly in the plugin? Try right-click and save target as.

There is need to shout. That is just being plain rude.

Why not open the PDF file in Adobe Reader, then save a copy to disk?

I have a client who is getting this error. I have grown so comfortable with PDFXchange viewer, that I simply remove Adobe Acrobat reader from client computers and install the free pdfxchange viewer. This client uses IE for Webmail and that is where he has the problem. He is using the 32 bit version of windows 7. It is a new clean system. Multiple pdf files have this problem. If he exits IE and does his webmail in Firefox there is no problem. The same files open fine. I believe they are scanned to pdf files but not ocred so they tend to be 600K to 1.2 meg in size. If he downloads the files he can view them fine. If he views in FF they are fine. It is the IE plugin that is the problem.

Sadly, his work requires that he use Internet Exposer. I updated him to the latest build 44. Same issue. I wonder if there is some setting in IE (whatever their latest version is that comes with windows 7), which is causing the problem.

Does his webmail try to show the PDF inline in its own webmail preview window?

I know that ADP online payroll system uses this approach for users to view their paystubs as PDF and IE does not pass the file but the link to the file which the IE plugin cannot load as its waiting for the actual document to load, whilst Firefox automatically downloads said file and the plugin works fine. If this is the case our development team leaders are aware of this problem but an adequate resolution is still being evasive and this is IE specific at this point.

If this is not the case please get back to us.

Nope. It actually offers download or open when clicking on the attachment, then downloads and opens if that is the choice. You watch as the progress bar shows the download and the error occurs after the slow download is complete and the viewer attempts to open it.
