PDF exchange viewer text box type is transparent??!! Help!

I am trying to make a text box with a solid gray background and black type. It looks fine when I'm typing in the text box but when I move out the type turns transparent. The box stays grey but the type is see through...what am I missing? I selected Black for the type color in the text properties tool bar and then in the text box properties dialog box I selected grey for the background, exclusion for the blend mode, 100% opacity and no stroke color. I am running Vista. Not sure why it's doing this but I'm at my wits end...I admit my wits aren't very long. Any advice would be appreciated.

Why did you choose the exclusion blend mode if you want black text? Use the normal mode.
