Slow page display of one PDF

Post by ncc1701zzz »

Hello.

I have a scanned PDF very slow to display, when scrolling. It is about 10 times slower than in Acrobat Reader.

I have lot of scanned PDF, but this one is specially slow in PDF-XChange, while it is ok in Acrobat.

I have made an extract of 10 pages here:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4681932/slow.pdf

You can see the effect with zoom at 10%, for example, so all pages are rendered.

It is perfectly usable anyway, I'm not complaining but I suppose the developers would like to improve this great software ;). But it's a little slow to use in a reference book like this one, when you have to jump pages a lot.

Regards!

Sorry, but I cannot see such serious slowdown. Yes, I can see difference in speed because of asyncronous rendering mode, but as for me it is not so dramatic. Can you specify your PC configuration so we will be able to make check on similar PC?

Hello. Thanks for your quick answer.

As you say, it is not a serious problem. In fact, it would not be a problem to read a book but to consult a reference book it's a little slow, because I jump pages very frequently and I have to wait about 1 second per page to render.

My computer is a laptop with Pentium (not sure the model) at 1.7GHz, 1Gb RAM, Windows XP.

At work I use a Pentium 4 3.4GHz, 3Gb RAM, it is faster but still a little slow.

Thanks anyway!

You are welcome ncc1701zzz,

There should be cashing for already visited pages so revisiting them is faster (provided there is enough free ram on the machine :) ), and new pages should be rendered any way, and no matter which Viewer you are using - our or Adobe's this rendering is inevitable - they have some "preemptive" rendering algorithms for consecutive pages but this will not help much when jumping around a manual.

We are working on improving the algorithms in general for ver3 of the Viewer so there you might see a speed up in both actual rendering and perception (we might introduce some tricks as well ;) )

Best,
Stefan
