Hi,
I am using the Viewer under Windows Vista (SP1) in the version 2.0.42.4. I reckon that there is a critical update to version 2.0.44. When I want to update via the integrated update function in the program, the update is offered but what is offered is not an update but a complete new install because a full installation routine with the question which folder to choose for installation is running.
Is that the normal behavior? I still havent updated because I dont know if I should use another folder or the existing one.
Another problem that bugs me (and there are some questions in the same direction I found on the net, unfortunately without a solution): I have to keep another program as the standard application for pdfs on a computer. But I still solely use the XChange viewer, just not as the standard application. Since one of the last updates, I am not able to open a pdf via right click, "open with".
The usual procedure is to choose "Open With" and then to choose from the list of "Recommended Programs" and "Other Programs" and once you have selected the application, it will be in the list.
The problem is that even if I navigate to the exe and choose the XChange Viewer the program is not added, nothing happens.
Is there any solution to this problem
Thanks in advance for your help!

That's normal. Just install .44 over your existing installation. As per your next paragraph, there seems to be a conflict on your machine between PDF Xchange and something else, probably that other pdf application. The other app in all likelihood is not wanting to share the pdf duties..pdfuser1 wrote: I am using the Viewer under Windows Vista (SP1) in the version 2.0.42.4. Your Xchange Viewer should handle everything for you - as it does for the rest of us. There is no need to have two applications of the same type on your machine unless you are getting needed functions from the 2nd app.
What I would do to if the update doesn't straighten things out for you is uninstall both pdf applications and reboot. Save/export settings if need be - before the reboot. Then install version 2.44. Without the conflicting pdf settings, things should work out. There are other ways to set associations - as noted in your Xchange help file.. but if you uninstall both, and reinstall PDF Xchange, the conflict that prevents file association with PDF Xchange should be gone.Another problem that bugs me (and there are some questions in the same direction I found on the net, unfortunately without a solution): I have to keep another program as the standard application for pdfs on a computer. Hi,
So I choose the existing folder C://Programs... etc. for a new installation in this update process? That's normal. Just install .44 over your existing installation.
I was just wondering because this potential conflict did always occur. I used another standard application for pdfs for a long time without having any problem rightclicking and using the "open with" option with the PDF Xchange viewer. And since I will have to keep both programs, I was wondering what changed. BEcause I didnt change any options apart from the usual program updates. Hopefully, the issue will be resolved with the new update.there seems to be a conflict on your machine between PDF Xchange and something else,

Yes. Just overwrite your existing installation. Update into the same folder.
Regarding the conflicts, it's very common. It's not the fault of the Xchange Viewer that the normal windows function "open with" is not available. Some other program has "tied up" the pdf association.
It's easily remedied by a simple registry change - deleting the pdf file associations that Windows is using.. My sense is that your conflict will not be solved by updating PDF Xchange.. The other app will not likely relinquish its hold. You will probably have to do what I suggested in the second part of my prior reply.. uninstalling them both, and then reinstalling. No big deal.. If you have settings you want to keep, just save them...

Re: Update to new version .44 and Problem under Vista
Hi,
thank you very much for your suggestions.
I uninstalled and reinstalled the XChange Viewer to the newest version (.49) (without any problems) and then also uninstalled and reinstalled Adobe.
However the problem is still there. I cannot open a pdf file via right click with the XChange Viewer. I right click, select "open with" navigate to the Tracker Software folder and choose the Xchange viewer exe but then nothing happens. Unfortunately I have to keep Adobe as default program (mainly because of work).
Is there anything else I can try to make it work?
Thank you very much in advance for your help.
