How to make files smaller

Post by MPdesign »

I have the pro version but I am not seeing how to make the file smaller.

I have 3 pages that are pics & I optimize and they are still 8 meg.

How do I make smaller?

Hi MPdesign,
I have the pro version
The Pro version of the Viewer is different from PDF-XChange 4 Prowhich is a bundle of the Viewer, Print Driver, Tools and more... You can tell what product you have by the first 5 characters of the serial code. PDF-XChange Viewer serials will start with PVP20 and PDF-XChange 4 Pro serials will start with PXP40.

Could it be that you are looking to do with the Viewer what the Print Driver was designed to do?

Please do not post your serial in this (or any other) forum though as it is public and will result in us disabling it and your product will no longer work. If you feel you need to send it to us please do so by email to support@pdf-xchange.com

I have PDF-XChange 4 Pro per the serials.

How do I make files smaller. I just need these as pdf's for clients with the same clarity for a printed report. I do not need the zoom in ability of many photos.

Hi again MPdesign

have you tried from within the Viewer File --> Print --> PDF-XChange 4 just with the default settings? Often times that alone is enough to greatly reduce file size.

Though note this caveat : printing to any 'virtual' driver will remove content/properties you may not want to lose as Windows sends only content to a 'Printer' that is required to print - e.g. Bookmarks, Gradients, Transparency info and in some instances, font info can be lost - so only do this if the file size is paramount and the other info can either be re-introduced (manually) - for example Bookmarks, - or you dont mind losing (transparencies etc)

Hth

okay,
So if I have put together 40 pages from different pdf's and I want them smaller, then I have to print them all to pdf again. There is not way to do it from within the program.

Hi,

At this time there is no direct optimzation method for images within PDF-Tools or our Viewer - this is coming in the next Major release due this later this summer, Thanks for your patience in the meantime.
If posting files to this forum - you must archive the files to a ZIP, RAR or 7z file or they will not be uploaded - thank you.

Ok. Got it. So I reprint it.

No problem.

Built in file size reduction would be great.

To make it simple and just say "reduce to 300 dpi print quality", "200 dpi", or 150 dpi."

I know certain people want a million options but 90% of us do not (or we want those in an advanced button submenu)

Again I am afraid not so simple - some files will actually print smaller at 1200 or 2400 DPI than they will when printing at 300 or 150 DPI - although lower DPI's will generally result in a smaller file - its not a hard and fast rule.

The best way to reduce file size where images are concerned is to use the best compression algorithm's available - we do have a new method we are investigating now for the 2010 Version we will release later this year which offers an unusual potential means to optimise images and we are optimistic this will assist greatly in the process - more specific I cannot be for now as we dont wish to alert others to the method.

I am no software engineer and just a mechanical engineer - but you have to be able to just do some sort of screen print internally with less colors, etc...

I am not talking about squeezing the last 100k of file size out of the file, I am just talking about getting the 11 meg 60 page document down to 2 meg.

Your program does the best job of handling pdfs that are way bigger than they ever should be (such as government maps). Other programs do not compare for being able to open and use such files.

I promise - I really do fully appreciate what you are saying - but I promise you its not that simple - if we just enabled some means to 'print' the file as you already know is possible - valuable content is lost potentially as already explained on another recent question - pls see here which may help to explain a little.

https://forum.pdf-xchange.com/ ... =40&t=8114

There is litle point in us just offering a similar optimazation method within PDF-Tools/Viewer as this would result in a deluge of support requests and an incomplete means of optimzation - better to allow users who want to to use the driver and accept the consquences/limitations than to provide a method which we know is fraught with potential problems - and then have to constantly defend ...

Regarding your other comments - thanks - the kind words are most appreciated ! :)

Was this feature implemented? (I found also the thread n. 7092 where, as I understand, you are talking about the same feature).
Would be really a nice feature!

Hello Bruno,

It's not yet present inside the Viewer/Tools, so for now the only way to downsample and apply a lossy compression to images is through our printing driver, but as you can see here:
https://forum.pdf-xchange.com/ ... hp?t=10100
In the new version of the Viewer we will be offering image editing tools, so lets see what those would be and if image optimizations is still not present we can make a FR for the devs to implement it.

Best,
Stefan
