Search Providers

Post by jwsmith »

I recently installed PDF-XChange Viewer Pro. In reviewing the Edit | Preferences | Search Providers I see a few providers I haven't installed on any of the browsers I use (despite the 'PDF-XChange Viewer' dialog indicating "You have the following search providers installed" and from their names, I probably wouldn't have installed them either. In researching this issue, it appears they seem to 'come along' with the PDF-XChange Viewer Pro installation. I'd prefer not to have 3 of them (Meta.UA, Seznam (cz) and Yandex.RU) but the Remove button just gives an error when I try that. How do I remove these?

Thanks for any insights.

Jeff

P.S. I tried uploading a screen shot of the Search Provider dialog as both a *.gif file and as a *.jpg file only to get messages like: "The extension jpg is not allowed." So, what extensions ARE allowed?

Hi Jeff,

firstly the easy question - all files uploaded to this forum must be archived/wrapped in a zip file format.

Next - there are no additional search providers installed in your system or browsers at all - these additional search providers are activated for use only within PDF-XChange - so for example if you see a reference in a PDF file and you would like to research the internet for more info - you can utilise any of the listed search providers within PDF-XChange to do so.

Try highlighting some text within a file - right click and select the preferred search engine/resource (e.g. Wikepedia) - you may find this incredibly useful - many do ... :)

The reason you get the error when trying to delete- most likely you don't have Admin rights - hence the error, but there is no need to be concerned unduly - nothing has been added to your system that will interact with any browser without an action initiated by you and even then - its only available within a PDF file.

If you really wish to remove - we can provide further info.
If posting files to this forum - you must archive the files to a ZIP, RAR or 7z file or they will not be uploaded - thank you.

Best regards

Hi John & thanks for the quick response.

I am the only user on this computer and the profile I'm presently using does have full Administrator rights.

To your "If you really wish to remove - we can provide further info" - yes, I'd appreciate this additional information.

Thanks,

Jeff

Jeff,

Please see the installation folder (usually) : C:\Program Files\Tracker Software\PDF Viewer\SearchProviders

The relevant XML files for each search offering will reside here - if you have full admin rights, rather than just 'Pseudo' rights (e.g. the Administrator account in full - usually hidden) - then you should be able to delete these - thus removing from PDF-XChange.

You will appreciate we do not offer support for Windows and setting any specific rights etc - so you will need to modify this yourself if this is not the case.
If posting files to this forum - you must archive the files to a ZIP, RAR or 7z file or they will not be uploaded - thank you.

Best regards
