[SOLVED] Dynamically remove white margins on displayed page

Post by awallberg »

Dear all,

I am running this in Linux using wine and everything just works. Thanks for a great program!

I wonder if it is possible to tell the program to trim the displayed page down to user defined art box dimensions or a "quick" setting. That is, perform trimming on the document, but only for display purposes, and not with the intention of trimming the document permanently. Maybe this is already implemented and I have not managed to discover it.

My usage scenario is the following: I use the Viewer as a reader in the Facing mode on a large monitor. This works great for many PDFs, but some have huge white margins, making the pages too small to read comfortably when show side-by-side. I could crop the pages, but I would like not to distort the original dimensions in the file.

My feature request is this: It would be nice to toggle a switch that temporarily removes the margins, just to help reading. Such a mode should not trim all of the white margins though (because then the black page line runs right into the first characters), but the user should be able to define a "padding" zone of say 1 cm or so.

Hi awallberg

I had originally thought that the crop tool would give you what you need because it does not actually remove content from the pages but redefine what portion is displayed. It has in it's controls a button for :Revert to original" which I had thought you could use after you are done viewing the document.

Unfortunately it does not seem to function as I expected so I have asked the dev team to take a look and let me know if I am misunderstanding this functionality or if there is actually a bug here.

I'll post back here once I have a definitive answer for you.

cheers
Best regards

I thought so too. But it seems to be more of a "start over" option in the dialog. Once you save the document it is permanent, at least from what I can tell by opening the pdf in other programs and by re-opening it in PDF-XChange. I would be happy to be proven wrong though.

I would too... ;-)

I will get back with an answer, unfortunately the dev team are finished already today so it will likely be tomorrow that we hear.

Ok. Now I see. If you do "Set to Zero" or manually resize the box on the page, you can get the original page dimensions back once you have finished reading it. Oh well, that works, but it is a little convoluted and prone to problems if one saves the pdf and forgets to switch it back first.

Hi again awallberg

I tried aggressively cropping a 6 page document, saving it, closing it then opening it and using the "Set to zero" you pointed out and it did fully restore the document. This backs up my understanding that nothing is removed from the document in the crop operation but only the bounds of the display.

Can you confirm that you can also recover the full sized document even after saving and closing the cropped file? I'd suggest you use a copy for testing purposes.. ;-)

Yes it works as it should. I do not really get how I could have missed this before. Hmm, maybe that had to do with the free version, from which I upgraded today. I can usually trust my nerdiness well enough to avoid such mistakes. Oh well, lets mark this one as solved.
