Not able to save annotations within FF

Post by redonion »

After adding in FF some comments to a pdf and saving the document, the changes disappear when I reopen the pdf file. Does anybody know, how this problem can be resolved?

I use the Pdf xChange viewer plugin for FF, FF 3.6.6. and Vista 64.

You may be reopening the wrong file from the temporary downloads folder. Save the file first, open it from My Documents (or wherever), and then make the changes.

Hello redonion,

It is a bit strange to open a local file inside the FF plugin but it is not impossible.
Could you please attach a sample file to this topic so we could check it - versions before and after the modifications would be great.
Also please check the build number you are using as the latest is 2.0.54 and if you are not with this one updating is highly recommended.

Stefan

Hello Stefan,

Build number is 2.0.54. I have attached the file before updating which is same as after updating - pdf xchange viewer does not update the pdf file (modification date and size are unchanged).

Thanks redonion,

The "problem" is that our Viewer does not save changes to documents opened by an URL (Yes a file:// is counted as URL as well), so the solution would be to use the normal stand alone version of the viewer and you will have no problems saving the changes.

Best,

Hi Stefan,

So, you say that annotations and other forms of document modifications are not possible with your FF plugin? According to some comments in other forums, such as Zotero (http://forums.zotero.org/discussion/3725/), it has been possible in the past. Is there maybe an older version that I could use?

I use PDFXV with Firefox every day. I have Firefox set to open pdf's in the PDFXV program itself (see attached). The file at that point is not yet saved to the computer, but can be annotated, printed, searched, etc. If I decide I want to save it to my hard drive, I have set up a shortcut key of "Shift - F" for the File > Save As menu item. Makes it real easy to save the file if I want to.

Hi Arnold,
I appreciate your suggestion, thanks. However, I have plenty of pdfs on my hard disk that I want to annotate from time to time. These collections of pdfs are organized with a document management tool (zotero), that uses FF. For this reason it is more efficient to open and change pdfs directly in FF. I have read in the forums that some users use for this purpose the Foxit Reader FF plugin. However, I would prefer to use PDFXV since I has some distinct features that makes it easier to work with. Is there maybe an earlier version of the PDFXV plugin with the save functionality working?

I understand now. My suggestion would not work for you then. Maybe Support knows if an earlier version works differently. PDFXV works better for me also in the business I am in, as I need to use forms and to mark up blueprints. It is powerful software.

hi redonion,

if I understand you correctly you want to use Firefox to edit a PDF file that is already on your file system rather than use the PDF-XChange Viewer stand alone application because your document management system uses Firefox?

I'm not sure if there was an explicit change or if this was a consequence of something else but I will have a dev team member comment.

Paul,

Thank you for looking into that. Is there yet a feedback from your dev team?

Hi, redonion.

We will try to resolve this issue but for the local pdf-files only which are opened by our mozilla-plugin inside from FireFox. The fix will be available in the next build.

Best
Regards.
