oblique text prints as rotated text

I have a PDF with some text set as oblique (slanted, commonly known as italicized). PDF-XChange Viewer renders the oblique text as expected on screen, and in the print preview. But it does not print the text properly on my HP 8550. The oblique characters do not appear slanted. Instead, they appear rotated.

PDF-XChange Viewer: 2.0 build 54.0
system: Windows XP SP3
printer: HP 8550 color PostScript printer having a builtin Ethernet card
driver: HP Color LaserJet 8550 PS

Adobe 9.3.3 prints the oblique text as expected.

Both PDF-XChange Viewer and Adobe print the oblique text as expected if I switch to an HP 4000 using the HP LaserJet 4000 Series PCL 6 driver.

Both PDF-XChange Viewer and Adobe print the oblique text as expected if I rebuild the PDF with the following method: Open the PDF in PDF-XChange Viewer. Print to PDFcreator 1.0 and save as PDF.

The problem is not reproduced on HP LaserJet P2055dn and HP LJ P2015dn (both PCL and PS drivers).

Do you have latest drivers for your 8550 printer ?

I was using the H-P PS driver Version 4.27.8550.440. A newer version 61.71.661.41 exists and I am trying it.

If I encounter the problem with oblique text again, I will post an update.

(For anyone else who runs into this thread, note that even though I created a test port and test printer to try the new driver with, the driver update overwrote my production printer driver. The only real pain was the loss of our sets of saved printer options (presets), which were apparently not carried over.)
