Hello,
I'm posting this message in the concern of keeping PDF file size small. I'm using the Viewer to add notes in my bank statements. I'm using the version 2.0 (build 48).
I notice that when I use the "Typewriter" function, new font is put into the resultant PDF file. I'm wondering if it's possible to make XChange Viewer reuse incorporated font existing in the PDF file?
On the other hand, I notice that every annotation, even with the shortest text like "test", made by "Typewritter" increases the PDF file size by more than 7kB. My bank statement files are about 15kB in size. After ten annotations and its size is 100kB. For me, the increase is really too much. Is that normal?
TIA
About file size increase. And reuse incorporated fonts?

Hello Horus,
If you have the exactly same font installed on your machine, you might want to try and use it in the typewriter tool.
How to set it up as default you can see here. And this should only add to the embedded font those characters that you are using that are not already present.
As for the Objects themselves - I am afraid that they have some inevitable overhead, as they need to be included in this page's structure, coordinates, and styles set and so on, so it's more than just a few more bytes for a few more characters added.
Another thing you could try is to flatten those comments, as well as reprinting the file through e.g. our Printing driver - this could reduce the size as well.
Best,
Stefan

I don't have those fonts (mostly Helvetica), or else I wouldn't have asked this question here. Have you planned to add such function, ie let use reuse embedded fonts?
About the object overhead, I'm not convinced. Because I've tried some other PDF softwares. All generate less than 3kB per object. One of them could even be as small as 2KB.

Re: About file size increase. And reuse incorporated fonts?
Hello Horus,
I am not involved hands on in the development process, but the overhead depends on the application and the information added with such an object. We seem to be adding more, and the editing options for such objects in our Viewer are probably more extended than in the comparison software you used.
Best,
Stefan
I don't believe this is practically possible, as it could be just a subset of the font that is embedded, as well I bet there would be some proprietary issues.Have you planned to add such function, ie let use reuse embedded fonts?

You've talked about "to flatten comments". How?
What is the name of your printing driver?

Flatten Comments is a licensed feature in our Viewer, so if you are using the free one and have selected in Edit -> Preferences -> Registration to hide such licensed features it will not be visible, otherwise it's located in the main menu -> Comments.
Our Printing Driver is the PDF XChange 4.0 (and this is how it will be listed in the available printers list in any aplication when you select to "print")
The latest build could be downloaded from here:
https://www.pdf-xchange.com/product/downloads
And we currently have a promotion running for the Lite driver - offering it free for home use:
