To view the full contents of this document...
We have received a PDF file which, when displayed in PDF-XChange viewer, shows only this text:
To view the full contents of this document, you need a later version of the PDF viewer. You can upgrade
to the latest version of Adobe Reader from www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
For further support, go to www.adobe.com/support/products/acrreader.html
When viewed in Adobe Reader 8.1.7, it shows a form that can be filled and mailed to the originator.
In the properties of the document, it shows as being created by Adobe PDF library 8.0
I have tried to study the structure of the document using PDFTron CosEdit (a program that I found
looking for a low-level PDF editor), but although I can see the section of the PDF that has the text
shown above, I cannot figure out under what conditions it is displayed.
Is there an issue with the PDF that the sender could fix? I mean, maybe someone hardcoded a fixed
release of Adobe Reader that this form requires to work, and the PDF-XChange viewer fails this test?
Or is it more likely that the PDF-XChange viewer really cannot display the form and we need to
install Adobe Reader to be able to use it?
I sent a report from within the program (Help -> Report problem) last week, but I am not sure if
it has reached you and/or you have replied to it. The report includes the affected PDF file.
(which I prefer not to post on a public forum)

Hello R.Janssen,
This file most probably contains XFA forms, and a script that checks whether this kind of form is supported by the current Viewer.
When the respective Viewer does not - the message you have seen is displayed.
We are working on a new build (ver 2.5) of our Viewer which should bring full XFA support, and such files would be opening correctly.
This new build is expected any time now, so check for it today and tomorrow, and I hope you will no longer see such messages
Best,
Stefan

Re: To view the full contents of this document...
Ok, I have downloaded the new 2.5.188 beta and indeed it now opens the document and shows the content!
However, there are still some minor annoyances and you may look into, considering this is still a beta:
1. the form as a field with a date. initially it shows as a correctly formatted date in local format,
like 13-10-2010. But when I click on the field it changes into -13102010 and when I click the downarrow
that appears right of the field once I click it, a calendar for "december 1899" shows up.
when I now click on the "today" area in that calendar, the field changes into 11/26/10 (American format)
and when I leave the field it changes into "nov 26, 2010" (also an American convention).
the system settings for "short date" are "dd-MM-jjjj" and long format is "dddd d MMMM jjjj".
2. the form has an area that is labeled "mail to ..." and when using Adobe Reader, clicking on this
area results in a mail window opening with a predefined To: address, the PDF file attached, and a
subject line equal to the filename of the PDF.
when clicking that same area in PDF-XChange Viewer, nothing happens except that it gets to be the currently
selected field.
as the form has no other directions (e.g. where to mail it to), the user is confused what to do after
filling all the fields.
3. when opening the document, Adobe Reader by default shows all the input fields marked. in
PDF-XChange Viewer it is required to first click on an icon in the lower left of the window to accomplish
this. maybe the default should be changed here, or maybe the PDF achieves this using a script?
I have sent the actual PDF earlier, on 16-11-2010 16:36 local time with title "Problem Report: Interactive features (form, comments, etc.) problems".
Hopefully you have it available so I don't need to attach it here.

Hi R.Janssen,
I have a ticket open for an issue titled Interactive features (form, comments, etc.) problems but it's in a different name and I have no attachment. What email address would you have used? Or maybe just post the form here?

Can I mail it somewhere?
It has all kinds of company info in it, and I don't like to post it in a public forum.
It was mailed to pdfxview at tracker-software.com at the abovementioned time.

Re: To view the full contents of this document...
I have installed the new 2.5.189 build and it looks like one issue was addressed: the date field no longer gets corrupted when I click into it.
Any news on the issue #2 posted above (mailing the result when a field is clicked)?
I need to decide if we switch this user back to Adobe Reader temporarily, or wait for another build...

Hello Rob,
I can confirm that for now this button "Mail to..." does not work in our Viewer, but will see if the devs are already working on that, or if a temporary revert to Adobe is necessary.
Best,
Stefan

Ok for now I have installed Adobe Reader on the system because the user really had to return the form...
Fortunately it appears that when Adobe Reader is installed on a system where PDF Xchange Viewer is already installed, the file type and mime type associations remain pointing to PDF Xchange and Adobe Reader only appears as a runnable program that the user can start to open this one particular document. The default for clicking on documents or mail attachments remains PDF Xchange

Hello Rob,
Glad to hear that you sorted the situation, and that you wanted to and kept the Viewer as the default application for Viewing PDF files.
Yes both application would be listed in the right click drop-down menu under "Open With", and each could be set to be the default.
For our Viewer this is done through Edit -> Preferences -> File Associations.
Best,
Stefan

Re: To view the full contents of this document...
I have installed version 2.5.190 and indeed some work has been done on issue #2.
Thanks!
However, it does not work quite like Adobe Reader yet.
A. The mailer opens correctly when the "Mail to SAP" field is clicked, and it has a mail body,
mail subject and attachment, but the mail destination address is empty. This is crucial in
our case because the mail destination address is nowhere mentioned in the document, it is
only by this click action on the field that the user knows where to send the mail.
Adobe Reader fills it correctly.
B. The attachment is a .ZIP file containing the .PDF document. The Adobe Reader attaches
the plain document without zipping it. I think in the interest of user confusion and possible
automatic processing of the received mail messages it is best to stick to doing the same thing
as Adobe Reader, i.e. not zipping the file. The compression gain on .PDF files is usually very
small anyway.
There is also a new, different issue:
C. When typing in a field and pressing ENTER, the newline character is added in the field itself.
i.e. the value in the field becomes multi-line and scrolls out of the visible field. By pressing backspace
the newline can be removed and the field value re-appears. In Adobe Reader the ENTER inside
a field appears to do nothing other than reformatting the value.
D. When the form has been filled in and mailed, the actually mailed version has empty fields
for every field that was changed. Unchanged field have their old value, but filled fields are all
empty (although they appeared OK in the viewer while entering the data and avoiding pressing ENTER).
This happened with the same form that I mailed earlier as an example. The column "Nieuw waarde"
(VALUE_NEW) has the fields that are supposed to be filled with numeric values.
Thanks!

Re: To view the full contents of this document...
I have installed and tested version 2.5.191 and it appears that issues B,C and D are now fixed
Thanks!
I only see issue A still present in this version (clicking on the mail button results in a mail composition window which
looks OK except that the mail destination address is not filled in).
Do you see this issue in your test environment?
We are using Mozilla Seamonkey as the mailer, and I tested with 1.1.19 and 2.0.11 with the same issue.
However it could be that other mailers do not expose this problem.
It works Ok for us with Adobe Reader.
