PDF-Xchange Print file size issues

Post by jaswht29 »

We are testing PDF-Xchange Viewer in our work environment, however we have come accross a major issue. We are using Version 2.0, build 42.2. When we print files, they are being spooled at a significantly higher rate than Adobe. From our testing it appears the problem begins on pages that have embedded images.

The first thing that we noticed, is that when we change the "Print Text as Curves" setting to "Auto," we do notice improvement from the originial spool size. However, there is still a spooling problem. For the most part, it is about 4 to 5 times worse than Adobe Reader. For the most part we really enjoy the PDF-XChange Viewer product. This, however, is a major issue for us.

Are there other settings or anything else that we may change to lower the spool size of .pds being printed?\

Also, for most PDF programs, documents are printed better when sent to a PostScript driver. Is this the same with Xchange Viewer?

Please advise. Thank you!
Sincerely,

Jason

Hello Jason,

Please download and test with th elatest build of the Viewer (2.5.190):
https://www.pdf-xchange.com/product ... nge-viewer
As the one you are using 2.42 is rather old, and we have made quite some changes since then.

As for control over the printing process and the spool size - I am afraid that there are no settings you can adjust in this aspect.

We can print to almost any printer and usually it should be only the resolution that matters for the print quality, but you can test yourself.
For some PS printers however you might need to turn on "Print as Image" as for some particular models and drivers without this setting the result is not ideal.

Best,
Stefan

I just got finished testing the 56.0 build and I'm still having the issue.

You mention resolution. Where does that need to be changed?

In the printing preferences for the specific hardware printer.

300 dpi should be sufficient for most printouts.

Changing the resolution of the printer has no affect on the fact that PDF-XChange Viewer spools documents to at least twice the size of the Adobe Reader (sometimes as much as 10-12 times as much depending on the document), when printing to a postscript driver.

Upon reviewing the forums more, It appears that there have been several posted threads about this. Has there been no solution to this?

In my testing selection "Print as Image" only makes the spool size larger. This is a severe issue when it comes to bandwidth utilization to our print server and printers.

Hi jaswht29

the key here is PostScript. We are implementing native postscript support in V3 of the Viewer. This will allow printing to postsript printers without using the Windows GDI. We expected this to have a dramatic effect on the spooling size comapred to what you are seeing now.

PDF-X Viewer 2011 (aka V3) is expected to be ready early 2nd Quarter of this year.

Thank you for your reply. That makes complete sense.

We will await the release of 2011 and see how much improvement it gives. For the most part, we like the product as an improvement over Adobe. Printing is just a major issue for us because of bandwidth issue, since many of our users are printing over a WAN connection.

Hi jaswht29,

thanks for being patient. Given that you have this environment are you interested in beta testing V3 when it is time?
