Plugin no longer taken into account in Opera 11

Post by TerDale »

Hi,

Was using Opera and PDF-XChange Viewer for long now, and used to enable the plugin. This used to work until (I think) I switched to Opera latest version (11). Whatever I tried concerning where to put the plugin (Opera plugins folder, Firefox one, PDF-XCV one) it is always ignored by O11.

I know they changed the way they handle plugins, though dunno exactly what, so maybe this is the explanation. Any clue?

Oh BTW, I'm on W7-64, running Opera in 32-bit (no choice anyway), and checked that the plugin located in Win32 sub-diretory of PDF-XCV installation folder is the correct version and is a 32-bit one.

TIA

Hello TerDale,

I am an opera user as well, and when Opera updated to ver 11.0 my browser plug in remained active and is still working.
Can you please go to Tools -> Preferences... (Ctrl + F12) -> Advanced -> Downloads - and search for "pdf" - this should leave just a few options.
Select the "application/pdf" and then select edit.

In the newly opened window check whether our plug in is available in the list under "Use plug-in".

Best,
Stefan

Oh really? Sounds interesting, are you also running O11 on W7-64, and have the 64-bit version of PDF-XCV installed?
And did you install O11 on top of O10? Just wondering as I didn't. That means that no settings was inherited.

Sure I did before posting this topic, but the combo is desperately empty, and I also checked opera:plugins, after copying your plugin :
- under "<operaInstallFolder>\programs\plugins"
- under "<firefoxInstallFolder>\plugins"
and in any case your plugin is not listed.

Thanks for your help

Forgive me if you've done this step: when searching for PDF, have you unticked "Hide file types opened with Opera"?

I do have the plug-in listed but I don't use it. If a link is direct to a PDF I R-click and select Open and that opens the Viewer after download has finished. If I do want to keep the PDF I R-click on the downloaded file in the d/l Panel and use the Send To option that I've added to the Windows context menu.

Nope, what for? PDF are not opened by Opera, as per default settings. And my problem is not that I can't see PDF in the extension list, I do, my problem is that when I try to open the combo box enabled when "Use plug-in" is chosen, it is empty. What is consistent with the fact the PDF-XCV plugin is missing from the opera:plugins page.

Thanks, but what I'm looking for is to have the PDF opened in the PDF-XCV plugin embedded in a new Opera tab.

Hello TerDale,

Well I am an Opera user, but still on an XP SP3 32 bit (will upgrade soon :) ), and I also did install it over the existing Opera 10.

If you installed Opera after the Viewer, the plug in might not be registered correctly.
Please opne the Viewer, and go to Edit -> Preferences -> File Associations.
Check the "Display PDF in browser" and then "Apply".
(if it is already checked, uncheck it, hit apply, then check it again and hit apply for a second time).
And this should copy and register the plug in correctly with Opera.

Best,
Stefan

Sorry, but O was installed first. Moreover, before posting this topic, I also tried exactly (uncheck then recheck) what you suggest, but without success.

FWIW, note also that I'm not running with an admin account, but with a so-called limited one instead. Anyway, I was properly prompted for elevation when toggling "Display PDF in browser", and in any case it was working fine in the very same context once with 010.

Hi Stefan,

Any news on this issue?
Did you have the opportunity to check if everything was correctly working with a fresh Opera installation?

I really miss this feature...

TIA

I don't have any problem opening PDF files in Opera 11.01 using the PDF-XChange plugin.
Opera 11 is installed in O:\Opera Beta\\
Opera Help, Plugins shows the following information:

PDF-XChange Viewer - 2.5.0191.0000
Description: PDF-XChange Viewer Netscape Gecko Plugin
O:\Opera Beta\program\plugins\npPDFXCviewNPPlugin.dll

I suggest deleting or moving operaprefs.ini and then check your MIME types in Preferences, Downloads, application/pdf

This looks like an Opera problem rather than a problem with PDF-XChange.

Hi Bhikkhu Pesala,

Thanks for feedback,

So, I infer that you mean that O11 was installed in its own folder, and not on top of O10. OK, so the fresh installation possibility is a dead end, thanks for helping me to figuring it out.
What about your OS: 32 or 64-bit? This should be of importance, as running on W7-64 I installed the 64-bit version of PXCV. However, as you know, Opera is a 32-bit process, and as such needs a 32-bit plugin. I requested once ago, that the 32-bit plugin be embedded in the 64-bit installer for such reason. It now is, so I copied this one to Opera's plugins dir.
Bhikkhu Pesala wrote:PDF-XChange Viewer - 2.5.0191.0000
I have the very same version, and copied it also below .\program\plugins...
Bhikkhu Pesala wrote:I suggest deleting or moving operaprefs.ini and then check your MIME types in Preferences, Downloads, application/pdf
Just gave this a try, but the "Use plug-in" combo box for PDF extension remains desperately empty

Well, could be, but as I have other plugins working, I thought that this was specifically due to the PXCV plugin. Now, I can try to post this issue on Opera forums (previously did some search without success), but I'm afraid to be told that it's a PXCV issue ;-)

Hello TerDale,

We have quite some users that are using Opera as their browser of choice, and I bet most are updating both Opera and our Viewer regularly.
As I have not heard of this from anyone else (and usually when the problem is on our end we get loads of bug reports for the same thing :) ) I would also strongly lean towards an Opera problem.

Please post in their forums, and we would love if you could keep us here updated with how it is going there.

Regards,
Stefan
