hyperlink to specific point in pdf?
MS OneNote has a handy feature that allows you to create a hyperlink to a specific point (paragraph, word, page, etc.) in the document.
Is there a way to do that in PDF XChange Viewer? Or is there any tool besides XChange viewer that allows you to do something like that? It would be a very handy thing to use when doing academic research with pdfs of articles, etc.
Thanks in advance!

It is not something specific to PDF-XChange, but you can link to a page or named destination of any PDF file using HTML. Search with Google if you need more information.

Also, if you like to have in the document link to any page inside the same document - it is easy to do into the viewer.

Re: hyperlink to specific point in pdf?
Thanks for your replies.
I tried using the html code, but I guess it is not working (or I am doing it wrong). Or perhaps that only works when navigating on the web, but not when you are navigating between documents on your desktop?
In any case, typing out the html code every time i wanted to link to a specific point would kind of defeat my purpose, which is to make tracking the origins of ideas very quick and simple.
Here's the scenario. Say you are doing research on the topic of postmodernism. You have several different sources (articles, books, etc.) in pdf. As you are making your outline, collecting your notes, etc., you want to make sure that you keep track of where the ideas you are using originated to prevent plagiarism. This becomes a very cumbersome and distracting process when you have to keep typing out citations each time (Lopez, After Postmodernism, 43).
My thought is that if you could configure a keyboard shortcut within PDF-Xchange Viewer to copy to clipboard a hyperlink to a specific portion of highlighted text, it would make that process SO much more efficient. Or, perhaps even better, add a feature to the snapshot tool that copies both the snapshot and a hyperlink to that particular page to the clipboard, which could then be pasted into OneNote or wherever. That would be absolutely incredible!

Re: hyperlink to specific point in pdf?
Hi flatlander,
have you tried selecting the text in the PDF document that you want to reference then hitting CTRL+Shift+B ?
This will create a bookmark to this text and use that text as the name of the book mark. So for example I'm on page 34 of the PDF-XChange Viewer manual, I select the words "Security Setup" and hit those keys I get a new book mark to that place with that text as the bookmark title.
The keyboard shortcuts can be customized too: http://www.docu-track.com/knowledgebase ... r-commands
Does that help? Have I understood your question correctly?

Re: hyperlink to specific point in pdf?
A professor of mine posts powerpoint slides that have hyperlinks in them to other slides in the very same powerpoint. When I convert it to a pdf and view it in PDF-XChange viewer, the hyperlinks almost work perfectly. Instead of taking me to the correct slide in the PDF, the links take me to the slide just after the correct one. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Re: hyperlink to specific point in pdf?
I have the same question as flatlander. I want to store in OneNote references to bookmarks of different PDFs. My intention is to store these different references in OneNote combined with further information. So If I am in OneNote and want to see one of the texts, PDF Xchange Viewer will open the PDF an shows the text I referenced.
I think this scenario is interesting for a lot of people.

Re: hyperlink to specific point in pdf?
Hello Leo14,
The original question from flatlander was if there is a way to add internal links in a document - yes this is possible with our Viewer but is not automated.
If you already have an OpenNote file with links in it, you might be interested in our PDF XChange Standard which will convert this file to a PDF and as it is part of the Office Package, using the plug-in that comes with the standard driver will be able to preserve those links.
Best,
Stefan

Re: hyperlink to specific point in pdf?
Actually, I think Leo is asking the same question I am. The issue really isn't the need for internal links. The desired functionality is to be able to click on a link in OneNote and have that link open a referenced pdf to a specific point in that pdf.
A real case scenario would be thus:
I am doing research on Aristotle's Ethics. I am taking notes for my research in MS OneNote, and in my notes I want to create a hyperlink to page 125 of my pdf of Aristotle's Ethics. When I click the link, I want it to open directly to page 125 so that I can begin reading immediately.
Does that make sense?

Re: hyperlink to specific point in pdf?
Has this issue been actually resolved? I have been trying to put a link to a pdf in My Notes Keeper so that it would open the document on a SPECIFIC PAGE. My Notes Keeper allows the processing of a path to a file and uses the default pdf viewer to open it. What can I do, though, so that it opens it on the page I want as well?
Thank you.
Thank you.

Hello radekzadek,
I had a discussion with Ivan just now, and we are sorry, but there is no way to make those links and tell them to "open this and this file on that page" while working on the file in My Notes Keeper, but it is possible, using our Viewer to open an already existing PDF document, and either create a new link or alter an existing one, and set it's action to be "Go to a page in another document".
Best,
Stefan

Hi, flatlander, radekzadek.
The open command specification:
PDFXCview.exe /A "param=value[¶m2=value[&...]]=OpenParameters" <FileName>
example:
PDFXCview.exe /A "page=10=OpenParameters" "C:\PDFs\My Test File.pdf"
PDFXCview.exe /A "page=10&zoom=125=OpenParameters" "C:\PDFs\My Test File.pdf"
Best

Re: hyperlink to specific point in pdf?
I have found a solution to make the references to a specific point in a PDF-document.
1. Define a bookmark in the PDF-file and give it a name
2. In OneNote make a connection to the PDF-file and adjust at the end of the Filename #NameOfBookmark
(d:\document.pdf#FirstBookmark)
3. Because there is a fault (?) in OneNote the sign of "#" is stored as %23 and the connection to the pdf-file doesn't work
4. If you change the %32 in a #-sign and store it again. It works.
It's a bit complicated, but it works.

Hello Leo,
You can try also with e.g. #page=3 and if that works there would be no need for you to open and add bookmarks to the PDF, but manually editing the links in OneNote to actually hold the # sign is a step we can't help with I am afraid.
Best,
Stefan

I must apologize.
My "trick" doesn't work. Because XChangeViewer reopens a document at the same place you left it, I was cheated in my trials. Opening the PDF-file in OneNote ignores all the letters after the #-sign. It's a pity
So I go on looking for another solution to solve the issue.

Hi Leo14,
does your trick work if you turn off the preference in PDF-XChange Viewer to remember that last page VIew?
Edit --> Preferences --> Page Display --> Page Display --> [uncheck] "Restore last used Layout settings.....when opening"

By the way. with Word-documents the trick with the #-sign and the name of a bookmark works in OneNote. (but this is not the right place)

Re: hyperlink to specific point in pdf?
I know its been a looooong time sine this topic was addressed. But, there is sort of an answer to the original question by flatlander:
Of course, there is a catch...
Native support for Linked Note taking is quite meager. It works with some (but not all) other Microsoft Office programs. PDF support is not natively available. (as far as I can tell)
Fortunately, the developers at OneNoteGem.com have created 2 different add-ons that significantly expand the linked note capability of OneNote. Their product Anchor to OneNote incorporates into Acrobat. Their product Anchor to OneNote for PDF incorporates into Sumatra. And they work beautifully. Sadly, I've searched everywhere for a means to use OneNote linked notes for PDFXC and cannot locate one. And because of that, it is with great remorse that I have changed my default PDF browser back to Acrobat. The transition is interesting: I'm quickly reminded of all the reasons I started using PDFX in the first place (macros, buttery-smooth scrolling, tabbed browsing, lightening-fast rendering, hyper-customizable interface...) I really hope this hiatus isn't permanent...
I decided to post here today, not as an advertisement for Adobe Acrobat but instead with the hope that the previous participants in this thread (and, perhaps, future lurkers) find the information useful. The integration is too slick to keep quiet; it has significantly changed my academic work-flow for the better. More unrealistically, I hope that some generous programmer hears my anguish and creates and extension which incorporates OneNote Linked notes capability into PDFX. If that day ever comes, I would gladly scrape my meager pockets to shower him/her with bits of my grad-school stipend. (More proactively but less realistically, I [the can-barely-make-a-helloworld-python-script-without-help-guy] have started an attempt to write my own extension. Don't hold your breath...)
Since Office 2010 (I believe) OneNote has allowed for the creation of "Linked notes" - in essence, they function like Flatlander describes (but, I think, even more elegantly). When you dock OneNote to the side of your desktop and have linked notes enabled, if you're viewing a document while you take the notes, a link back to that section of the the document will automatically become embedded in the section of your note. That way, if you're reviewing your notes later and want to pull up the original source you used, you simply click on a small icon to the left of the note and it will open the document AT THE SAME LOCATION. Plus, if you hover your mouse over the small icon, a screen-shot of the section of the reference document appears. For someone (like myself) who has to read a lot of PDFs (and take effective notes to summarize) this feature is sick-nasty-awesome. I know my description is pretty weak...watch this for a more effective demonstration: hereMS OneNote has a handy feature that allows you to create a hyperlink to a specific point (paragraph, word, page, etc.) in the document.
Is there a way to do that in PDF XChange Viewer? Or is there any tool besides XChange viewer that allows you to do something like that? It would be a very handy thing to use when doing academic research with pdfs of articles, etc.

Re: hyperlink to specific point in pdf?
Hi mtd91429,
Thanks for additional information. I'm afraid that this isn't likely something that we could help with, though it may, at a future point, be possible for us to create such a plugin that would allow for this to be done. I cannot promise that though and, if it possible and was agreed to, it would likely be a long term project.
Cheers,
