Hello,
I would like to ask a question on the default application for PDF documents.
I have two PDF viewers installed on my computer: Adobe reader and PDF-Xchange reader. I use the latter more often due to its speed and rich customization. But every time I am clicking the link of a local PDF document from within the environment of other software, say, Autocad, then they by default opens the document in Adobe reader.
I have tried several methods to solve this with no avail:
1. I have already set PDF-Xchange reader to be the default application for opening PDF documents, from PDF-Xchange reader’s own preference settings.
2. I have disabled Adobe Reader’s “check if this program is the default application for PDF documents” option.
3. I have configured Windows’s “default programs” to make PDF-Xchange reader the default application for opening PDF documents.
All other PDF documents in my computer are opened by PDF-Xchange Reader by default, but many links from within other software are still opened by Adobe Reader.
Is there a way to change this?
Thanks,
Kai
Xchange viewer is not the default opener for PDF(some cases)

What happens when you uninstall Adobe reader?
And when that fixes it, re-install it without making it the default reader?
I have installed the two programs side by side on one system and it works OK.

Dear R. Janssen,
I cannot re-install Adobe reader, it takes too much time.

Re: Xchange viewer is not the default opener for PDF(some cases)
Hello Bob,
One possibility is that Adobe's browser plug is still the default to be used when you want to open a PDF directly in your browser, and based on the way those other software products work with links - they might be launching your browser and loading the default browser plug which for you could still be Adobe.
The other possibility is that the links are hard coded to be looking for Adobe (e.g. when you embed documents in a Word file - it embeds it in such a way that it is then looking for a specific program to launch, and that program only, and not the default program for this type of files) - the same could be the case with AutoCad.
So please try to make our Viewer to "Display PDF in Browser" (in Edit -> Preferences -> File Associations) and if this doesn't help - then I am afraid it is the second case and we can't do much more.
Best,
Stefan

Dear Stefan,
You are right. For the first case I found that "Display PDF in Browser" is useful, but there is no way to change behavior in the second case.
Thanks,
Bob

Hi Bob,
I am sorry but there is nothing we can do with embedded files that are looking for Adobe - this is an internal check, so we have no control over this, and no solution is possible I am afraid
So for cases like this you will need to keep Adobe installed.
Best,
Stefan
