File Attachm. Tool: How to use twice for the same file

Post by enaef »

Hi
Is it possible to use the File Attachment Tool more than once in the same (long) pdf without attaching the same file several times? (In order to prevent blowing the file up).

Hi Ernst,

I don't believe there is a way to do this. Each attachment becomes a part of the document. I must ask however why you seek to do this. What is the advantage of attaching the same document more than once?
Best regards

Hi Paul
For example for this:
A 36 pages text regarding Cancer Management of Head and neck tumours. I have a *.gif with a picture of the anatomy of this region. The matter is quite complicated and I need the help of this attached picture in several parts of the text which refers to the anatomy several times.
There are different tumours in the Oral Cavity, in the oropharynx, the hypopharynx, the larynx and the nasopharynx. There is a chapter for each of this anatomical parts and in each chapter the text explains something about the anatomy. The *.gif helps to visualise and understand this, but it is always the same picture/file.

There is not enough space in the pdf to "paste" the picture.

Is this understandable?

Paul, here you can online see what I mean: http://www.cancernetwork.com/cancer-man ... 65/1802498

I work with the saved pdf-version (scroll down), where I highlight things etc. etc.

Hi Ernst,

while it is possible to code the Viewer to be able to have multiple references to a single attachment we won't be doing so because this is a limitation of the PDF specification itself. One of our main aims is to keep the Viewer 100% compliant with the ISO regulated PDF specifications.

You might find it better to put the .gif in the same directory as your PDF then use the link tool to reference it rather than the attachment tool. This way the PDF file size remains almost the same (the text and link info is minimal in size) and you can use as many references to the image as you like. As I understand it for medical images it would be better to keep it in it's origianal format due to the importance of there not being any subtle changes in tone colour etc.

If you need to send the PDF to anyone and include the referenced images I suggest keeping only the PDF document and the images in a folder specifically for this purpose. That way you could zip the folder and email it and the receiver of the file will, so long as you use relative links, be able to access the image through your links.

Does that help?
Best regards

Thanks Paul

Ok, ISO again  I understand.

Now, how can I use relative links? In the "Open a file" window there is a section "Options" with a field "Directory". Is this for this purpose? The PDFVManual doesn't help in this regard since it gives no clue what for this Directory-Option is (could be better to be honest).

HI again Ernst,
Ok, ISO again  I understand.
- thanks - I don't like to harp on a point, perhaps I'll 'chill out' with using this... ;-)

Regards the relative or absolute link, the Viewer will default to using relative paths even though it will display the an absolute path in the properties of the Link Tool. You can verify this by trying the following:
  1. Put your PDF in it's own folder
  2. Add the image to the same folder, or even a subfolder
  3. Use the Link Tool to link to the image file either by using the browse button or typing in the file name with a relative path.
  4. Save and close the PDF
  5. Open the same PDF again and mouse over the link with the 'Select Tool'. You will see the absolute path displayed. This will also be what is shown in the link properties.
  6. Close the file again
  7. Move the folder with the PDF and image(s) to another location on your PC
  8. Open the file again and you will see that the absolute path shown by the Viewer has changed to reflect the new location.
This is exactly what you want if you are going to send the folder to someone. When they open it the link properties will display the path to where ever the recipient saved the folder on their PC.

Regards the manual, we are in the process of reviewing all our manuals and this should be improved in the coming months.

I hope that helps.
Best regards

Thanks Paul
After my request regarding absolute or relative links I tried out exactly what you were suggesting with your last answer (points 1-8) and discovered what you explained, that the links by default "work" relative, which is great for "my situation".

All the best

Hello Ernst,

Glad to hear that it's working now for you.
I deleted a duplicate of your post, and have passed your words to Paul :)

Cheers,
Stefan
