Recovering a session.

Post by philipw2 »

So I often have many PDFs open. Sometimes when I close PDF-Xchange Viewer and reopen it, not all the files I had open do in fact reopen. Sometimes instead it reopens files that I had previously closed. I assume that the list of open files is somehow not up to date. How can I ensure that PDF-Xchange viewer remembers all the files it is closing when it shuts down?

This question is a variant of a question that I asked a year ago and still isn't resolved.

Thanks.

HI philipw2,

I am assuming you have the following set in the Viewer Preferences:

Edit --> Preferences --> General --> Opening Documents --> Restore Last Session when application starts [checked]

I am not aware of an issue regards this and it seems to be functioning correctly for me. Can I ask you if
  • the files in question are typically local or network based?
  • Is it that same files that fail to open or does it seem random?
  • Can you describe in detail the steps I would take to reproduce this?
regards
Best regards

Paul,

Thank you for your attention.

Yes I have that option checked.

To paraphrase, Most of the files do come back all of the time and All of the files come back most of the time. But not all of the files come back all of the time.

All of the files are on my hard drive, a few have been downloaded by IE and a few by FF and are still in my downloads directory.

The files that fail to reload are the most recently opened ones. Many of these have comments and bookmarks and saved to separate directories by topic.

The best way to describe it is On Tuesday I have 45 files open---I use PDF-Xchange Viewer as my desktop in many ways. I exit and reopen and the 45 files open. Two weeks pass and it is now wednesday. I have closed some files and opened new ones. SO my total is still 45. I exit and reopen. However what comes up is not the current Wednesday list but the list from that Tuesday two weeks ago. (I will often go a couple of weeks between reboots.) In essence sometimes, PDF-Xchange Viewer loses track of which recent files list to use, using an old list rather than the current one. I suspect that the long time between reboots and long list of files are quite challenging for the viewer.

But this doesn't happen always but frequently enough as to be irritating, since I often cannot remember all the documents I was working with and count on PDF-Xchange Viewer to remind me. I might have forgotten a gem of a fact that proves my point.

Is that detailed enough?

Thank you for looking into this.

Hi philipw2,

thanks for the detail, it is very helpful. One thing that I can tell you is that the state of PDF-XChange Viewer is saved when the last instance of it is closed. Given that you suggested that there can be long intervals with the PC running and (maybe?) PDF-XChange open that the open documents are not being recorded as you expect because the state is not written to disk?

It might helpful, at the end of the day when you have open your 'current' 45 documents to close PDF-XChange and force the state to be written to disk? This way the next time you go to resume work it will be sure to be in the same state as you left it. In effect you would be consciously saving the list of open documents by closing the Viewer.

Does that help?
Best regards

Sorry for the delay in answering. Spring break.

That seems logical. I will pay attention to that. In many ways PDF-Xchange is my go to app for research. So I keep it open all the time. Unlike other important apps, Outlook and FF, it never is a distraction, so I do not close it down for quiet time.

Re: Recovering a session - has never, ever worked

Lack of experience with forums makes me unsure I'm placing this note in the proper place. Apologies in advance to everyone if not. However, the subject of this thread directly relates to the issue I want to report. I am using the free PDF-XChange product; have been experimenting with it for several months. I have never, *ever* had it restore a session to my previous state (where I mean, the list of documents that were open at the time I shut down the app.) Yes, I do indeed have the Preferences option checked for Restore Last Session When Application Starts -- but it just isn't working -- at *all*. I have Maximum Documents in Recent set to 50. Would that be too high for some reason? Can I find the document where the session is supposed to be being recorded? If so, I can check for its existence, and I can monitor it to see if it is being written on application exit. Any other hints would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, and this is one awesome app! :!:
