Writing cooments in Right-to-Left Languages

Post by natushka85 »

Hi,

I really like your product, but a major problem for me is that comments in Right-to-left languages appear "backwards".

I guess you are aware of this issue, since it was raised in this forum as early as Aug 2007 and again more than a year ago (https://forum.pdf-xchange.com/ ... =35&t=6583). In both cases there some promises were made to resolve this issue in the next release, but apparently this did not happen. I genuinely wander why. Today it is very rare to come across programs that don't handle RTL languages well. This is a major issue preventing many Arabic and Hebrew users from taking advantage of your otherwise superior product.

I hope you will take this matter to your attention.

Best,
Natasha

Hi Natasha,

You are right that we are still not able to provide RTL support, but ver3 of our PDF XCHange Viewer - which is in active development at the moment will receive a complete redesign of the text functionality and will include RTL suport in it for sure.

Ver 3 is expected in several months time.

Stefan

It would be very helpful if you put up a beta version of the new release cause the complex script is very much needed here as well :)

by the way, the viewer software is great :D

Hey amirishere,

As stated above it will be in ver3 - and it needs some more time even till beta builds are released so Right-to-Left and Top-to-Bottom scripts support will have to wait :(

Hi, Again,
As a quick but painful work around for the LTR users I would like to suggest to:
1- download and install paint.net (nice mspaint replacement).
2- There create an image of the texts that you want with a white background.
3- Save several image files containing each text separately.
4- Import the image files into the stamp template in the xchange viewer.
5- Stamp away with your text, happily

Thanks for the workaround amirishere,

It is not nice to have to use the method described but it's just temporary - ver3 is approaching.

As for the Top-to-Bottom Languages though I need to make a small clarification - they will not be supported in the initial builds of ver3, but the Right-to-Left should be fully functional.

Stefan

for us, we are filling pdf forms in three languages (arabic, english and french)
and it's really ambarassing to use a tool (pdf x-change viewer) for LTR languages and another one (GIMP or Xournal) to fill out arabic (RTL text) forms.

where can i find the roadmap of the project pdf x-change viewer...?

thank you for this great tool and good luck !

Waiting for the V3(RTL support)

Hi everyone

In our enterprise we use arabic pdf forms to fill out, and the only annoyance with the excelent pdf x-change viewer, is that it's impossible for us to adopt it!

we are waiting for the r-t-l support in the V3, so that we can benefit from this excelent pdf viewer!

Hello Riad,

Yes it is indeed getting closer and closer and it will be included in ver3 of our Viewer.
If you have not seen that already you can find a brief outline of what is coming in version 3 here:
https://forum.pdf-xchange.com/ ... 35&t=10100

More detailed information is not being released at this time due to our need to keep more commercially sensitive detail out of the public domain until closer to the release date, which we anticipate being later this spring as previously documented.

Hi,
I was wondering if the upcoming RTL support applies only to comments, or to search, copy & paste and text entry as well.
The opening post expressed surprise that RTL support has not been implemented. I can tell you after a lot of experimenting that when it comes to pdf editing it is actually quite rare. In fact only Adobe Reader as far as I can tell has the capability to search, copy/paste, and write comments in RTL (specifically Hebrew).
I have found 2 programs - Nitro & Soda PDF - that can do just comments in RTL not the rest (I saw a post on a Nitro forum saying something about the comments using Windows text system or something thus explaining how they alone can have that capability. This also seems to be the reason why when you create a comment in PDF-Xchange it types backward, then shows up fine in Adobe.)
Bluebeam PDF Revu 9, Foxit 5, Perfect PDF 7, and Nuance (I think) are just like PDF-Xchange is now.
So while RTL is standard in most applications it seems difficult to implement in PDF Editors. If you do pull it off - Wow!
Thanks

Hi ymmp,

I will double check but I believe RTL support for the items you mentioned wil lbe part of Version 3 of the Viewer, if there are items that aren't supported once Version 3 has been released our development team will surely consider them for future builds.

I will see what I can find out for you though and get back to you on it shortly.

Best,

Chris

That makes me wonder - what is the upgrade policy at Tracker? If I buy the Pro version now, will I be able to upgrade to V3 for free?

Hello ymmp,

Yes a license purchased now does include a year worth of free upgrades and maintenance - and this includes new major versions, so yes you will get ver3 for free even if you purchase a license now before it is released.

Any new info?

Also is there a specific place to find out more info about purchasing, such as what a single license covers i.e. can I use it on a second laptop that I own, etc.?

Hi,
I hope there could be a response soon because if I do purchase the Pro version, I would like to do so before the price goes up July 1.
Another interesting note on this topic: I noticed that while Nitro allows the comments to be typed RTL, the summaries come out backwards! Does this mean the summaries in PDF-Xchange come out correctly because they've been reversed twice? Has anyone tried this?
In any case, clearly the RTL problem needs an overall solution.
Thanks

Hello ymmp,

I was waiting for Chris to follow up on this, but yes - it is confirmed that RTL support will be in the new version of our Viewer, and also the inconsistency you have noticed in Nitro we will certainly try to avoid - and RTL should be RTL in all occasions and places.

Hello Stefan

I appreciate your efforts, please do make an update.

the whole Ver. 3 issue is strange, I bought the pro version of the software about a year ago with anticipation that Ver 3 will arrive in a few months after my purchase, although I am pleased with the software as is I would have delayed my purchase until Ver 3 is actually released if I knew there would be such a delay.

There is a feeling that something went wrong about Ver. 3, and I wonder if RTL support will ever arrive.

I think pdf Xchange is a great software, but I purchased the pro Ver. only because the promised RTL support in the promised Ver. 3

Hi,

whilst I appreciate the delay is frustrating (for all) - nothing has gone wrong - things have progressed considerably - its just a much bigger job than anticipated - unlike most of our competitors we offer a comprehensive Developer's kit as a part of our product for 3rd party dev's and coupled with the fact that this is a 100% rewrite of all of our creation/manipulation/viewing tools - along with a significant feature extension - it is taking longer than expected - the mistake we made was to try an estimate a completion time way to early in the project.

Everything you expect and more is coming - please be patient, there is not so long to go now and it will be worth it !
If posting files to this forum - you must archive the files to a ZIP, RAR or 7z file or they will not be uploaded - thank you.
