typo repair tools

Post by wleman »

I'm starting to learn how to use PDF-XChange Viewer.

I have a PDF file produced by a commercial firm that scanned my original typed (with a typewriter; anyone on here young enough to remember those machines?!) manuscript, converting it to a PDF file.

I want to repair typos and other defects in the PDF file.

1. I have tried the Highlight Text Tool to surround the defective area, then keyboard the correction. But then the red line border of the Highlight Text Tool remains on screen as well as in the saved file.

2. I have tried the Typewriter Tool but it overwrites the original and I can then see both the original and the correction on screen and in the saved file.

3. I have tried the Eraser Tool, but it only erases what has been written with the Pencil Tool.

I know this is such a basic question, but I haven't found the answer anywhere in the program menus or Help files:

QUESTION: What do I need to do to remove errors or defects in the original file and replace them with corrections without adding red lined borders?

Thanks for that Bhikkhu,

indeed in it's present form PDF-XChange Viewer does not support editing of the base content of a PDF as you are describing. The article Bhikkhu referred you to details how to type over existing text and 'mask' out the underlying text.

Do know then that in the new version of PDF-XChange Viewer there will be basic editing of this underlying 'base content' available in the Viewer with a possible plugin coming for more advanced editing.

Thank you, Bhikkhu and Paul. I was able to make some typo repairs and mask over the original text. It looks like this is the PDF Editor that comes closest to what I've been looking for. I plan to buy the Pro version to get some of its features that I need such as deleting pages.

Hi wleman,

thanks for the feedback. I'm glad to hear you have achieved what you need. Do keep an eye out for the new version, I think it will give you even more of what you want.

Also bear in mind that a purchase of the current Viewer license now will also give you a free upgrade to the new version when it is released.

Thanks, Paul. I'll be looking for the new edition.

I paid for the PRO version today and then completed what remained to be done to revise my old manuscript.
