Print Dialog Too Big - Overflows Screen
When I try to print, the Print dialog in XChange Viewer is too big and overflows the top and bottom of my screen. There is no scroll bar and no way to move the dialog since the title bar is off the top of the screen. I can't see or change the destination printer as a result. This would seem to be a bug. Shouldn't XChange Viewer know how much screen resolution is available and size the dialog to fit?

If you use a larger interface font, the dialogue can grow too large for the screen.
Change it in Preferences, Customise UI, Common Interface font.

Re: Print Dialog Too Big - Overflows Screen
Actually, my settings were already on "9pt (auto)". I had never touched them. Shouldn't "Auto" recognize available screen real estate and size properly to support it?
I selected "8pt" but that's the lowest possible setting. Even at 8pt the print dialog gets cut off.
Is there any way to fix this?

Hello ChaosFreak,
The Auto setting matches the font size in our viewer to the default one set in Windows - and with Win7 that's 9 even on small netbook screens.
As for 8 being the smallest offered value - you can click in the field and type in any number in there (e.g. 7.5)
You can also try changing the fonts themselves as different fonts could be different in height even with the same size setting.
The default in XP is Tahoma size 8.3 and this results in a print dialogue screen with a height of 601 pixels.
Best,
Stefan

Re: Print Dialog Too Big - Overflows Screen
I did click the field and type in smaller numbers but it ignores them. It saves the number in the field but the display doesn't change at all. It seems that 8 is the minimum.
This dialog box is a monster. It contains way too much information. Also, why don't you just display scroll bars when there's not enough screen real estate?
BTW, I'm running Win7 and my laptop is not a netbook, it's a normal sized laptop (Acer Aspire 3810T).

Hi ChaosFreak,
we are redesigning this dialogue box to fit on a netbook screen. Look for this in V3 later this spring.

Re: Print Dialog Too Big - Overflows Screen
Hello ChaosFreak,
Paul's comments are true, but in the mean time I also did a quick test on a fresh installation of a Win7 Virtual machine.
The screen resolution was set to 1024 x 768 (I checked and your laptop has a vertical resolution of 768 pixels as well) and a fresh installation with the default settings was fitting the print screen without problems, but after setting the UI options to this:

The print screen's size is this:

Note that those images have not been scaled or altered in any way - I just used Alt + Print Screen to take the captures, and then saved them with MS Paint - and the height of the print window is 598 pixels.
Best,
Stefan

Re: Print Dialog Too Big - Overflows Screen
But did you try it with the Windows DPI settings set to "Medium" or "Smaller"? I suspect yours is set to "Smaller". I have to set to "Medium" otherwise everything's too small to read!
I think everyone's missing the point, here. Why can't you just put a scroll bar in the dialog box and size it to fit the available resolution? A dialog box should never overflow the screen...isn't this a bug?

Re: Print Dialog Too Big - Overflows Screen
Hi ChaosFreak,
it's not a bug - it is designed to be able to fit on a 1024x768 screen as Stefan showed. We are addressing this for netbooks in the next version as I mentioned above so rather than add a scroll bar we have elected instead to wait for the new version. In the new version expected at the end of spring this becomes a moot point anyway.
I hope that makes sense.

Re: Print Dialog Too Big - Overflows Screen
Well, I'm not sure it does make sense since I don't know how you've "redesigned" it.
However, as a programmer I would say that any dialog box that only fits on a specific size screen and is not compatible with standard OS settings like DPI adjustments is not designed properly. If a dialog box overflows the screen and features (like "select printer") cannot be accessed, that is a bug. All of my other programs size their dialog boxes within available horizontal and vertical resolution and use scroll bars when they have more information to display.
Too bad as it's a useful program generally but unusable if I can't select my printer.

Re: Print Dialog Too Big - Overflows Screen
HI again,
I don't know that it will help us to get into the semantics around the use of the term "bug", call it what you like.
We have a workaround available now, you can see the entire dialogue as Stefan showed with the Windows DPI settings set to "Smaller" or you can wait for the next version. We won't be coding a scroll bar into that window when we have already committed to changing this in the new version that is literally only weeks away now.

Hmmm... so the "workaround" is to make every other program I use unreadable or to wait for the "new version." Let's hope the new version really fixes this issue.

Hello Chaos,
Please consider e.g. DPI set to smaller and default font size in WIn7 set to e.g. 10 or 11 and this should still make the rest of your applications readable.
Also thanks for your understanding and patience while we finalize ver3.
Best,
Stefan
