Viewer loads very long

Post by PeterPan »

Hi,
first of all thank you, for your great pdf-viewer! But since the last few days I've got a strange problem with the viewer.
I have ne newest version, I haven't changed any settings (since the last few weeks) and I didn't installed anything. But when I double click at any pdf file (so it isn't file specified) nothing happens.
You can see in the task manager, that there is a new task of the viewer, but you can't see anything (gui and so on).
Then you can work with your pc and maybe three or four minutes later, the pdf-x-change viewer pops up and everything is ok, until I want to open another pdf file.
I uninstalled the reader, restarted my pc and installed it again, but it stays the same.
The problem is very strange, because the last month everything was fine and now I have no idea how to fix my problem.
Please help me!

K. Braun

Hi K. Braun,

that certainly does seem odd. I suggest the first thing you should do is a clean re-install.

1: Please uninstall all you have installed so far from the Windows control
panel (in Windows XP this is in the option 'ADD/Remove Programs' - in
Vista 'Programs and Features') and restart your PC when complete.

2: Download and start this installer : https://www.pdf-xchange.com/PDFXVwer.zip

3: When asked by the installer - please copy/paste your serial number
(below) into the installer if appropriate.

S/No: PVP20-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX

4: Now complete the install and restart Windows as instructed

5: Open the PDF-XChange Viewer - go to the Edit Menu ->
Preferences -> Registration and ensure the above serial number is also
copy/pasted there and all should be well.
Best regards

Hi Paul,
thanks for your answer.
Before I posted here, I already did the 5 Steps. I haven't bought any pdf-x-change viewer yet, so I have no serial number.
But nothing has changed.

Hi K.Braun,

OK - thanks for confirming that. If a fresh install is doing this then I suggest that there may be something that is interfering with opening the files. Do you have any security applications/firewall running? If so can you tell us what you have?

Hi Paul,
I'm using ESEt Smart Security 4 and I think that is the problem. I deactivated all functions and then Pdf-X-Changeviewer starts fast (but not as fast as a few weeks ago).I tried to repair Eset, but that didn't change anything. But it's strange because a few weeks ago, I was using the same Eset version too, so there must be a problem with an update or something likte that.
Sadly you can't deactivate Eset completely.

What should I do now?

Hello K. Braun,

Please check the settings in Eset and look for a list of trusted applications, or exclusions from monitoring - and see if you can add our Viewer in those lists.

An update to our Viewer while Eset is running could have triggered a suspicion in there which might not be shown to you or accessible in any way to remove it.

An uninstall with Eset active, and a reinstall with it temporarily disabled might also be an option if there are no trusted lists in eset, or if this does not improve the performance as expected.

Best,
Stefan

Hi Stefan,
yes there is somethin like a list of trusted applications. I added the viewer but it changed nothing.
Tomorrow I will uninstall the viewer when Eset is active like you said. I hope this changes something, but if not I uninstall eset and try then again.
If the viewer is still slow there must be another problem.
See you tomorrow again :D
Thanks Stefan!

I uninstalled Eset and the viewer, restarted my computer and installed pdf-x-change viewer again. Now it starts fast, not that fast it was a few weeks ago, but fast enough. (about 5 seconds)
I installed Eset again and nothing worked, not even Eset itself. I tried a lot of things and lost much time.
Conclusion: Eset won't be on my pc again, now I use Avast (maybe Kaspersky later) and it is okay.
Thanks for your support, which is amazing. Maybe it gets better with the new Viewer version which will be released in the next few month?!

Hello K. Braun,

Glad to hear that you found a solution to your problem. We do not usually recommend a change of the AV application - as most people would object, but I ensure you that it's the AV that is being paranoid rather than our Viewer having some malicious code inside ;) and there are lots of free AV solutions out there - and our Viewer is working with most of them without issues (we have had issues with some older builds of Kaspersky but the latest ones are OK).

Yes ver3 is in the final stages of development and should be ready really soon, and we do try to make it faster, better and more stable than ever!

Regards,
Stefan
