Complex PDFs extreamly slow when opened from network share

Post by lgitlitz »

I just started using this viewer and it is pretty amazing. I am currently using version 2.0 build 195. The only major issue I am having is when opening complex PDF files from a shared PC on a the LAN. If I open a dumb PDF over the network there are no issues. If I open a 1MB PDF with 10 bookmarks then things get slower. There is about 5 second delay of the opening document screen and then all is well. Now the major issues come when I open some complex design PDFs. The one I am working with now is 12.5MB, contains a bunch of java-script and has well over a thousand bookmarks. This document gets stuck in the opening document window for a good 15 seconds, the bar is at 100% instantly. After the window goes away it is about another 10 seconds before anything is rendered, just blank white. Once the first page is rendered there is a good 45 seconds waiting for the bookmarks to load. If I try to navigate the PDF during this time it is very slow and other pages are not yet rendered. So after a minute or so the bookmarks appear and all works well. The PDF takes just about 1 second to copy over the LAN via explorer so a slow network would not be the issue here. Opening this same file locally will open and render the first page instantly, then another second or two until the bookmarks appear. Honestly I would much rather have to copy any PDF locally as a workaround then use another viewer. Thanks again for putting out the only viewer that is an acceptable replacement for the first party crash-ware.

hi lgitlitz,

it sounds to me like the issue is network latency between your workstation and the file share. In version 3 of the Viewer, expected to be available at the end of Spring will support "Fast View" where it can render a PDF as it receives it.

Unfortunately I am not certain of the details and whether it will work with your existing PDFs on your share or whether the PDF needs to be optimized to use it. I will ask one of our development team members if this will help. You should have an answer here on Monday.

Failing that I suggest a local copy...

To lgitlitz: can you provide us your document for testing?

Hi lgitlitz.

Can you also do following test: copy file to your PC and open it locally?

Also, what type of LAN you are using? Local ethernet, VPN, or another configuration?

Hi,
I have some new info on this problem. The problem seems to be due to the SAMBA share, this PDF opens fine when hosted on a Windows PC. The LAN PC showing problems is running an old Fedora Core 2 build, currently I do not have any newer Unix based machines running shared directories to test. I have never seen similar problems when opening files hosted on this machine. The LAN here at my office is all 100BT Ethernet, no more then 15 PCs on the network with minimal traffic. I am currently running Win7 64-bit. There is no VPN, just basic LAN file sharing. We design embedded network devices and regularly are doing all sorts of performance testing. The round trip ping response time to the PC hosting the PDFs is <1ms. The PDFs generated by our Altium PCB tools give the worst problems. I can't provide the document I was working on due to some confidential material but I attached a different one from an example PCB. I had to use 7zip to keep the file size small enough for an upload to your forum server. This example takes over 2 minutes to fully load from the network Fedora PC, but loads instantly when local. The file transfer is just over 2 seconds when transferring via explorer, about 5 seconds to open via ARX from the LAN Fedora PC. I have also noticed similar problems with processor datasheets though not nearly as bad as these PCB documents. The delay seems to be relative to the number of bookmarks.

Again, this is not a critical problem for me. I have no problem moving the few complex PDFs to my local machine for viewing. Just thought there might be an underlying issue here you might want to investigate for the V3 reader.

Hi lgitlitz,

we have identified where the problem is in this and will be able to improve this in V3. PDF-XChange Viewer 2011 - AKA V3 is still on track for a release at the end of spring.

Dear Support Team!

I have experienced the following problem(s) with the PDF-XChange Viewer:

Hello,

opening problems.
When I open a PDF from a network share, PDF-Exchange is downloading the complete file before it is opened. Opening in browser the same. Other PDF viewer like Adobe partially download and show the PDF while downloading.

from shares. In PDF viewer opening a PDF with 200 pages takes over 30 seconds before you can read it.
That's not good.
If it's the pdf on a local diks, PDF Viewer open it fast

Please note the PDF-XChange Viewer has been superseded by the PDF-XChange Editor and no ongoing development is taking place with the Viewer any longer, so it is in your best interest to try the Editor rather than the Viewer as this is where all future improvements will take place - so it would help us and you if you used the Editor and we can then respond;

The Viewer is still available for use if you prefer - but the important thing to remember is that there will be no future development.

If posting files to this forum - you must archive the files to a ZIP, RAR or 7z file or they will not be uploaded - thank you.
