Open pdf file in read-only mode
Hi,
Is there a way to open a .pdf in read-only mode, either using the GUI or commandline?
Thanks,

Re: Open pdf file in read-only mode
Hi ktan,
The pdf can only be read only, through setting the file permissions in the windows explorer level or by setting the security permissions of the document via File->Document Properties-> Security , but there is no commandline/GUI readonly options in the end user software.
Best,
Chris

Re: Open pdf file in read-only mode
Thanks for your explanation.
Here is my specific usage: Pdf-Exchange Viewer allows multiple instances
to view the same document. This allows me to view 2 different sections at once,
eg table of contents and detailed chapter.
When I edit the document in one viewer, the file cannot be saved because the other
viewer has also opened the file in edit mode. If the table of contents can be opened
in read-only mode, then Pdf-Exchange Viewer would know that only one instance is
editing the file.
Should this be reported as an enhancement? Is so, where should I submit it?

Re: Open pdf file in read-only mode
Hi ktan,
I can forward it on to our development team as a feature request, please note that they are hard at work getting V3 or the Viewer ready for release so any feature requests will be considered for after the initial release of the new viewer.
I'll get back to you with the development team's response to your request as soon as I have it.
Best regards,
Chris

Re: Open pdf file in read-only mode
Thanks. No hurry.
Just thought that it would make multiple instances more useful - ie one instance opened for edit, all other instances opened for read.

Hi ktan,
As there will be no new V2 Viewer builds released prior to V3`s release, this may already be addressed in the V3 Viewer. I`ll confirm this with our dev team and get back to you tomorrow on it.
Best,
Chris

Re: Open pdf file in read-only mode
Hi ktan,
I can confirm that V3 will have a feature where you can open the same document in 2 windows, make changes in either or both view and all changes will be saved to that one file.
I hope this will fit your needs.

Re: Open pdf file in read-only mode
Hi,
That's great news!
When is V3 available? and would it be in PDF-XChange Viewer as well?
I think the current viewer is 2.5.195.

Hello ktan,
You are correct - the current build is indeed 2.5.195.
And when Chris speaks of ver3 - he has ver3 of the Viewer in mind. The rest of our products are currently on ver4 so their new version will be 5
As for when it is expected - we hope to have an initial build really soon - hopefully in just several weeks time.
Best,
Stefan

Thx for providing us with a great piece of SW
I have a similar need as the original poster..
I use the xchange viewer (pro) to read and mark up patents. (weird hobby I know...)
As patents in general have their text and figure/drawing sections split, multiple view-ports of the same document is a need..
This can currently be done in read only mode (or renaming two copies af the same document differently) , but it would be a great feature to be able to use multiple view-ports (windows) of the same document, be able to "modify" either and being able to save the changes back to the document..
So the question is, when is ver 3 due ?

Hello Hans,
I am afraid that all the information we have for ver3 and the release date is posted here:
https://forum.pdf-xchange.com/ ... hp?t=10100
So it will be at some point later this year, but we do not have an exact date yet.
Best,
Stefan
