Turned Pro! - Some Questions

Post by ymmp »

Hi,

Bought the Pro version and very happy about it!
I would like to compliment you also on a well done manual, I just have a few questions:
1) When using attachments is there a way to not add the attachments to the file itself? (for example, I have a 190MB file that I use often and there are about 15 other pdf's (totaling another 250MB or so) that I reference w hen using it, if I attach all of them, the file will be 440MB!)
2) Is it possible to link to a folder, I only see an option to link to a file?
3) I have seen an "edit mode" in some products, the thing I am most interested in is to be able to delete pictures.
4) I noticed that when I added attachments to a file, an Attachments button appeared in the bottom left-hand corner next to "Options", is there a way to add other buttons there such as bookmarks?

Thanks a lot

Hello ymmp,

And glad to hear that you decided to purchase a license for our products!

Now to answer your questions:
1) The idea of attachments is that all the files are bound together in a single file - so that they can easily be distributed as a whole. In your case this might not be too practical, but there is no way to attach a link I am afraid.
2) Nope - linking is to files only, and might be the better alternative than 1) - you can put links to your helper files in your main document, and those links would be on the relevant places - and as long as the files are in the same relative position to one another - your links should work , and open the helper files when needed.
3) We do not have such an edit mode yet, but this is a feature planned for PDF XChange Viewer 2011
4) The lower left corner shows only the icons that are relevant for a given file - e.g. if you open a file with a Form inside - you will see a light bulb that allows you to highlight all the form fields. The bookmarks pane is above them and you can always open it (even when there are no bookmarks in your document) with Ctrl + B, the Comments pane is opened with Ctrl + M.

Best,
Stefan

How about attaching a batch file that will open the destination file or folder?
Just my 2 cents

First off thanks Stefan for the answers. One of the reasons I chose Tracker after a lot of research and experimenting is this friendly and timely support.

As far as your answer to #2 (linking to folders), I'm not quite sure I understood your suggestion. I do a lot of academic research, so let's say there is a book in pdf form I need to study, and it contains various technical terms and words in other languages, etc. so at any point while reading the main document I may need a quick access to a variety of references such as dictionaries, related articles, etc. That's why I thought attaching and/or linking to a folder containing them would be most efficient.
To benradu, thanks for your response. I am not familiar with batch files (though I did google it before writing this to at least have some familiarity). Do you know of any shortcut generating programs (I had them on my WM phone!) that would ease the process?

As for #4, your response brings up another point. I primarily use a tablet-convertible (x201t), are there plans to make the Reader even more touchscreen friendly?

Thanks again.

Hi ymmp,

I believe that Stefan was referring to using the Link Tool to add a 'hotspot' to a PDF page that is defined by an area. If you add/have some relevant text you can use that Link Tool to make a link to a location in the same PDF document, a URL or an external file.

Image

The key here is that when pointing to a file it will of course only work if the recipient of your PDF has that file and specifically in the location you specified when defining the link. If the file is not found in this location it cannot of course open it.

Regards the tablet, we are indeed working on improving the usability on tablets for V3. You might want to take a look at the Commenting section of the Viewer Preferences (Edit --> Preferences --> Commenting) where we have already implemented some control over how comments are accessed, this is often used to make working with tablets and touch screens easier. Specifically the 2 items to "Enable Exclusive mode..." can help with keeping the focus where you want it so that touching a comment does not select it unless you hold down the SHIFT key.

hth
Best regards

Thanks a lot for the ideas.
I'm thinking of writing up a page in Word with the names of all the links, turning it to pdf, adding it to the file in question, then setting up the links and a bookmark to that page.
