"Check for Updates" is disabled in PDF XCHANGE Viewer

Post by monaleesa »

I am running PDF Xchange Viewer Version 2.5 (Build 195.0, April 12, 2011) on my Windows 7 desktop. This is the free version. The link for "Check for Updates" is disabled. How do I enable this link so that I can update to the newer version (2.5.197).

Thanks.

Hey Monaleesa,

It shouldn't be disabled. I believe your best bet is to uninstall the viewer from Programs and Features located on your Windows control panel then download and re-install it. Here is a link to the viewer.

Thanks Jamie.
I spent quite a bit of time to customize the toolbars the way I like them. Is it possible to install the new version on top of the existing version (without uninstalling it)? If not, then if I export the settings as a dat file, will this preserve my toolbar settings when I import it again in the new version?

Hey Monaleesa,

I can see how preserving your settings would be important to you. Both options are possible and will work for you. You can install right over and you can export your UI settings which would preserve your toolbars. Let me know how it goes.

I installed the new version on top of the existing one. "Check for Updates" is now enabled and all my toolbar settings were retained :D
While installing the new version, I realized that last time when I installed the viewer, I did not select "Live Update" option in installer whereas I selected it this time. Could it have caused the "Check for Updates" to be disabled previously? Curious!
Thanks for your help.

PS: I switched to Nitro Reader from Adobe, and then recently switched to PDF XChange Viewer. I have to say that PDF XChange wins hands down as compared to the other 2 :) It is very light weight, fast, and I really like the bookmark feature as well as the fact that it remembers the last location of documents when opening them.

Hey Monaleesa,

I am very pleased that worked out for you. I think you are correct about the install setting for automatic updates. I will inquire with our development team about it leaving that option greyed.

Thanks so much for the praise, it's very gratifying to hear such a positive feedback about our product. Please let us know if there is anything else we can work out together.
