See enclosed screenshot: the text in the left window is supposed to be black but is rendered in gray. This is nothing to do with the Gamma settings, as evidenced by the document shown on the right.
As an example, refer to the document "Segmentation of interwoven 3d tubular tree structures utilizing shape priors and graph cuts" on page http://gpu4vision.icg.tugraz.at/index.php?content=Cat_0

Re: Some pdfs produced by latex appear too light
Hello Fred,
Please when you open our Viewer go to "Edit -> Preferences -> Color Management" and under Conversion Options, either change the engine from "Little CMS to "Microsoft ICM" or turn on the "Use black point compensation" and the file should appear correctly.
Best,
Stefan

Thanks, Stefan, this is a lot better, though not yet perfect: The text still is not pitch-black (the cursor used for text selection can still be clearly discerned as a vertical black line in front of the dark gray of the letters). Do you have additional hints?
Overall, I find this issue to be hard on the eyes -- it effectively reduces the dynamic range offered by the screen.
Thanks for your quick reply!

Text in the document uses CMYK color space, and the viewer convents colors from CMYK to RGB using Color management settings. You can change setting of color management (CMYK profile for example) to archive required results.
P.S. The same it true for Adobe acrobat which doesn't render this text as pure black too
