Viewing PDFs

Post by SarcasticWit »

If this issue has been addressed here, please forgive me, but my searches did not prove fruitful...

I decided to try your PDF viewer as a replacement for NitroPDF after one of their upgrades hampered its use in some of my uses...

The issues I have discovered are:

When I attempt to view a PDF online, for instance, a document in a credit account that I access online, I am forced to "save" it to my system first before I can view it...

When attempting to "print to pdf" from a website, such as epicurious.com, I get no preview page, and the option to "print" is not available

I am sure this is probably a setting I am missing somewhere, but I never had this issue when using the NitroPDF software...

Before installing your program, I did uninstall NitroPDF, and when installing yours, I made it the default program for PDFs...

So what am I missing?

In closing, I do think overall your program is superior not only in speed of rendering, but I think it also has a much nicer interface, and I would even consider purchasing the advanced program which would allow the creation of PDFs, as your price point seems reasonable compared to other programs...I've recently discovered that the ability for me to create PDFs might have come to the point where it is time to invest in a program which accomplishes this...

Thanks in advance...

Hello SarcasticWit,

In order to be able to provide you with a specific advice for the "wants to save instead of display in the browser" issue - we will need to know which is the browser you use.

For the second issue - if the "File -> Print" option in the main browser window is not active - then try the "Print" button in the Viewer (either the toolbar icon or the File -> Print menu in the Viewer's window. If you can't see the File menu in the Viewer - with it active press F9 to show it) - and this should show you the print preview, and allow you to print the file, or are you attempting to printing a plain HTML page to PDF?

Best,
Stefan

Thanks for what I consider a rapid response, considering I posted on the weekend and got a response on Monday...KUDOS!

My default browser is Chrome, which may also contribute to the second problem...I say this because using IE 8 (I don't use IE often, and due to other software issues with 9, I've not upgraded) I was able to print to PDF...I am not sure if I would have the problem with online PDFs usint IE 8, but I would much prefer to be able use just one browser...

Thanks...

Hello SarcasticWit,

Yes we work from Monday to Friday (though usually someone is on call weekends for urgent responses such as serial number issues etc) and try to answer all posts as quickly as possible (usually within an hour if you post while any of the offices is currently manned).

You say that you have selected our Viewer to be the default, but have you set it to also be used in browsers?

Please stop chrome and then open the stand alone Viewer and go to Edit -> Preferences -> File Associations.
There you will see a checkbox with "Display PDF in Browsers" next to it. If it is not already selected - do so and click apply.
If it is - try to deselect it, click Apply, then select it again and click Apply for a second time.

If this does not change the situation in Chrome, please open Chrome and go to Settings -> Options -> Under the Bonnet -> In the Privacy Section select "Content settings..." and there navigate to Plug-ins and click the "Disable individual plug-ins..." link, and make sure that you can see our PDF XChange one in the list and that it is not deactivated.

Also have a look at this help topic in the Google Support pages:

Best,
Stefan
