I had to install Acrobat X because of a PDF generation problem from PowerPoint 2003 (had to make a PDF document from a .pptx with transparencies, and none of the PDF generators through postscript printer drivers could do it - as Postscript doesn't support transparency). Now I just can't seem to make PDF Xchange Viewer the default again. Ran PDF XChange Viewer as root, or from an unprived account, and clicked the "make this the default" box, but it doesn't do anything. In a directory all PDFs say "Adobe Acrobat Document", and double clicking one opens Acrobat.
Is there a way to make Acrobat loosen its tenacious grip on ".pdf"?
Acrobat X default PDF reader no matter what.

Re: Acrobat X default PDF reader no matter what.
Hi mathog,
you have done the right thing setting the Viewer as default Edit --> Preferences --> File Associations --> Make Default PDF Viewer should do this.
Try that again - it needs not be as administrator as the settings are per user. If it still fails there is something stopping the re-association. In that case you could try going to a PDF file in your file browser - where currently you say it is associated with Adobe, then right click the file --> Open with --> Choose default program --> select PDF-XChange Viewer.
This should force the association correctly.
Regards the printing issue with your ghostscript based printers, why not try our print driver? https://www.pdf-xchange.com/product ... e-standard (also comes bundled with Tools and the Viewer) It is not postscript based and should create your Powerpoint files correctly.

Re: Acrobat X default PDF reader no matter what.
I think I figured it out. Right click on file, open with, select PDF Xchange viewer, then
a dialog pops up (this is new, see below):
I had just been doing OK, or ran as Administrator. Finally tried unchecking that "Protect my computer and data..." option, and then the association changed like it was supposed to.
This may be Symantec Endpoint Protection sticking its nose in. It was installed this morning before
Acrobat X was. Never saw that dialog before today, it must be from one of those two products.
If it were for my own use I would try your PDF generator, but this is for work, and we have a site license for Acrobat Pro. (I wasn't involved in any way in that purchase.)
Thanks.

Which user account do you want to use to run this program?

[check] Protect my computer and data from unauthorized program activity.
This option can prevent computer viruses from harming your
computer or personal data, but selecting it might the program
to function improperly.

Hello mathog,
I'd say this dialogue is from the Symantec side - as I've never seen anything like this from Adobe.
Best,
Stefan
