Display PDFs in Browser is not set after installation

Post by schechi »

Hello,

we want to switch from Adobe Reader to PDF-XChange.

We use a software deployment System to completely install our Citrix XenApp 6 Server on W2K8R2.
We installed PDF XChange Viewer Version 2.5 (Build 201.0) Jan 23 2012.
Everything is fine but the Display PDF in Browser setting is not set correctly.

we use the x64 MSI to for installation. We created a MST in which we set that "display pdfs in browser is active".

After a user logs on tho the w2k8r2 Terminal Server and the first time opens a PDF PDF-Xchange asks if the user wants to "display pdfs in the browser". This setting should alreade be set while installing the msi with the mst.
If the user clicks yes he is asked to give administrative credentials in order to set the setting "display pdfs in browser".

I suggest clicking on "yes, I want to display PDFs in a Browser" results in setting a reg Key under HKLM or placing a file in C:\Program Files or something like that.

How can we manage that users won´t be asked if they want to display a pdf in browser? The settings should already be checked at first logon.

Thanks in advance
Dirk

Hi John,

Ißve tried multiple times to upload a single zip (33Mb). The window that says that the upload is currently in progress is no closing and I can´t see any attachment in this post.

Tried with Firefox and IE.

Can I upload to an ftp or is there a different way?

Thank
Dirk

Hi Dirk,

in our MSI installers we do not have an option for the silent installer to currently set our Viewer as the default (offline) PDF Viewer and this is required to operate in the manner outlined (we will add this - but it was deemed by some to be a little controversial and had potential for screw up's where alternate products were in use by 'some' users ...)

However there is a work around - if you were to run the command line as detailed on Page 20 of our Viewer manual 'MakeAssoc'
/makeassoc Makes PDF-XChange Viewer as default PDF-viewer.
web=yes|no If this argument is used and its value is yes, it
enables displaying PDF in Internet browsers by
PDF-XChange Viewer.
For example,
PDFXCView.exe /makeassoc
PDFXCView.exe /makeassoc:web=yes
/makeiassoc Enables displaying PDF in Internet Browsers by PDF-XChange Viewer.
This would resolve the issue and we believe if run by an admin would reset for all users - or you could setup as a small Batch file to be run on each users install the first time used.

Do note - our friends at Adobe's updates often reset Acrobat as the default Viewer without asking !

So it could be you will need to run that command line option again at some point in the future ...

Hope thta helps

I am using the Free PDF excahnge, Japanese windows 7 64bit and Firefox 10.0.2 (not 10.0.3 because I have one add in that is not yet compatible)

For me PDF Xchange is being used to display PDFs in IE, but not in Firefox.

I tried copying
/makeassoc Makes PDF-XChange Viewer as default PDF-viewer.
web=yes|no If this argument is used and its value is yes, it
enables displaying PDF in Internet browsers by
PDF-XChange Viewer.
For example,
PDFXCView.exe /makeassoc
PDFXCView.exe /makeassoc:web=yes
/makeiassoc Enables displaying PDF in Internet Browsers by PDF-XChange Viewer.
to a text file, saving it as makeassoc.bat and executing it, and then restarting Firefox, but Adobe is still being used.

at
about:config
filter=pdf pdf I get only this
extensions.ui.lastCategory;addons://search/PDF-Xchange

I really like the ability to comment in PDF-XChange. I hope that I can do so in Firefox my current browser of choice.

Hello Tim,

Can you please check this KB article and see if the advise there will help you?
How do I set PDF-XChange Viewer as the default method for displaying on-line PDF documents in Mozilla Firefox?

Best,
Stefan

Thank you very much indeed.
I did both of those. The checkbox was already checked in PDF XChange. I clicked the button again. I also changed the browser setting from "Always ask" (though I have never been asked!) to PDF-XChange in firefox, but so far it is not happening. Perhaps I need to restart Firefox. I have a lot of tabs open that I want to process before I restart so I will report back soon.

I also tried re-starting my computer, but that did not work either.

I have Add-to Search Bar 2.0, Bookmark Favicon Changer, JavaConsole, Locale Switcher, QuickDrag, Tabutilities, and Zotero installed. I tried disabling TabUtilities since I thought that might be the only one that could have an effect but it did not help, alas.

Hi Timtak,

It looks to me that perhaps you did not run the command line as it should be. Can you try the following:

Code: Select all

"C:\Program Files\Tracker Software\PDF Viewer\PDFXCView.exe" /makeassoc:web=yes
The quotes are needed. YOu should be able to put just this in your .bat file ot paste it directly into a Command prompt as I did below. It would be prudent to use 'Run as Administrator' when launching the Command Prompt.

Can you try that and let me know how that goes for you?

Thanks again.
I am on a different computer now. I installed PDFXChange Viewer,
and set it as the default viewer in the two ways specified above.
I then I used the following method of running the console as administrator
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows- ... a-run-box/
I copied from your post above and used right click paste to paste into the console.
No error was reported. I restarted Firefox and Adobe is still being used.

I uninstalled Adobe viewer and I all is now well, until it manages to find a way of insinuating its viewer back into my system. For me this is a solution. Thank you very much for all your help and your great piece of software.

Hi John,

I manually executed "C:\Program Files\Tracker Software\PDF Viewer\PDFXCview.exe" /MakeAssoc:web with an administrative account and logged on as a test user. Everything is fine now.

Aftter that I put the command in our software package. Now 2 XenApp Testservers a reinstalling from scratch.
Tomorrow I will test if it works.

Thanks !

Problem is still there.

Maybe something in the software package is wrong.

I will have to investigate.

Hi schechi,

do keep us up to date with how this goes. The command itself should be good. We have not introduced support for XennApp so we won't have much to throw at you I'm afraid.
