changing default color of tools
How do I change the red color of the line tool to black?

Hello Mygalomorph,
You should be able to do this from the properties toolbar. If you can not see it press Ctrl-E to toggle it's visibility.
I would also recommend you to check this KB article:
How do I quickly access variations of a specific Tool so that you can store both styles for future use.
