Inaccurate Font Display

Post by marc_ampa »

Hi,
If I open a document in PDF-X-Change Viewer the display is inaccurate in comparison to Adobe Reader.
It seems as if it is a lower resolution at the screen.
Is there any option to solve this problem?

thanks

Hello marc_ampa,

And welcome to our forums.
We will need to see the file to be able to tell more (and ideally screenshots showing the differences), but most likely the fonts that this file uses are not embedded - this causes both Adobe's reader and our Viewer to search for substitutes. Adobe has access to some proprietary fonts to which we do not - so it's possible that they do choose a font not from the Windows/Fonts directory - and produce a different result on screen.

As for the "loser resolution" - could it be that you are comparing 100% zoom in our Viewer with 100% zoom in Adobe's reader - they are using 110 DPI as their default instead of the 96 system default - so files at 100% in their Viewer look "larger" than in our at 100%.
You can change this in Adobe via Edit -> Preferences -> Page Display -> Resolution.

Best,
Stefan

Hi Marc,

And thanks for the screenshots, but if you can also provide us with an actual sample (send it to support@pdf-xchange.com if sensitive) we should be able to tell whether this can be fixed with changing some of the Viewer's rendering settings, or if it needs to be investigated further.

Best,
Stefan

Hi Marc,

Thanks for the sample you sent us by e-mail. As explained in my reply to your e-mail - the font used in this document is rather unusual and it's the anti-aliasing algorithms used in our Viewer and in Adobe's reader that cause this difference. We are investigating different AA algorithms for v3 of the Viewer, but in the mean time - if you use e.g. a 150% zoom - the text should be readable even with the current viewer.

Attached is a comparison between our Viewer and Adobe's reader at a higher zoom level.

Best,
Stefan

Uh-Oh... "investigating"?

I was prepared to see almost a tiny revolution regarding PDF-XChange Viewer font rendering as a matter of fact, in v3 (from the discussion here).

Has this changed, such that you are still "investigating", but not implementing?

Hi David,

Apologies for the incorrect way I expressed myself above!
We have certainly already decided on the rendering, but I just dont have all the technical details the dev guys do!

Rendering will indeed be greatly improved in the new Viewer.

Cheers,
Stefan
