Download PDF Creation Tools

Post by anon_private »

I see the button ' Download PDF Creation Tools'.

Are any of these tools free?

If so, please indicate which.

Thanks

In addition to the FREE version of the PDF-XChange Viewer (allowed use is both private and commercial) home users also have access to the free version of PDF-XChange Lite provided it is not used commercially.

see here ;

If posting files to this forum - you must archive the files to a ZIP, RAR or 7z file or they will not be uploaded - thank you.

Thank you for the link.

I have downloaded the free software and installed it in its own folder.

I also have a copy of the free viewer from a previous download and note that PDF Viewer and Shell Extensions are in both folders. Should I delete the original PDF Viewer folder? PDF Viewer is listed in Windows Control Panel and hence can be uninstalled from there.

What is the difference between print to pdf Lite and Save As from, say, the MS Word File Menue? I realise that 'Save As' will not create a pdf file, but it could if the pdf converter worked accordingly.

Am I correct in thinking that people would prefer to save to pdf rather than, say, MS Word because the formatting in pdf will be the same regardless of machine?

Thanks

Hello Anon,

If you had installed the previous version of our products in a custom folder -then yes this is quite possible.
I would recommend against deleting folders as they are now.

You should first uninstall all our products, reboot, delete any remaining files and folders, and only then reinstall the latest build.
This way you will not accidentally break any working installation, and will certainly have the latest build we have to offer.

As for the Word question - if the other party is accepting Word documents - you can send your work as such, if not - the PDF standard guarantees a better cross platform acceptance of your work, and if all the fonts are properly embedded in the PDF - this will also guarantee that your file will look the same irrespective of any conditions on the recipient machine.

Best,
Stefan

Thanks for reponding.

I have the original free pdf viewer in a folder called 'Tracker Software'.

I have the latest build (Printer Lite 2012) in a folder called 'Tracker Software PDF XChange Lite 2012'.

I would have thought that I could simple uninstall the former?

Do you still recommend uninstalling both folders and then re-installing the latter?

Best wishes.

Hello Anon,

Yes - it would be best to uninstall both, then download and install the latest builds of both products.
Once that's done - you should have a folder called:
C:\Program Files\Tracker Software
And inside it there would be two subfolders - one for the Viewer:
C:\Program Files\Tracker Software\PDF Viewer
and one for the Lite printing driver:
C:\Program Files\Tracker Software\PDF-XChange Lite 5

Ok, I'll take your advice.

Presumably, I need only download from the link you suggested previously (https://www.pdf-xchange.com/free_lite_home.html). Both product are there.

Best wishes.

HI anon_private,

I think there may be a little confusion as to the 'versions' you have installed. You have 2 quite different products installed there:
1. PDF-XChange Viewer - while you can create PDF from text files, images, scanners or even a blank one from scratch or this is used mostly for Opening existing PDF files, vieweing them annotating them etc.
2. PDF-Xchange LITE 2012 - this is a virtual print driver and is designed to capture a print out from pretty much any file format and create a PDF from the print job. This way you can 'print to PDF' pretty much anything that can be printed to paper.

So you have 2 quite different products that perform very different tasks. You should, as Stefan says, clean up your installations by removing both and installing both.

Thanks for responding.

Does not PDFX5SA_LE_H.zip contain the viewer?

Best wishes.

Hi anon_private,
Does not PDFX5SA_LE_H.zip contain the viewer?
Indeed it does! The regular licensed LITE does not and you caught me out here, the Free for Home Use version includes the Viewer in the installer.

So you are right, you can install just https://www.pdf-xchange.com/PDFX5SA_LE_H.zip and get both the LITE and Viewer installed.

...and I will stand corrected.

:-)

I have now re-installed.

I have read a review on the product at CNET (http://download.cnet.com/PDF-XChange-Li ... 87985.html) where it states that:

'...but it does print watermarks on documents...'

Is this true?

I was also surprised to see that they offer to download ver.5.0.260. I assume that they are giving the version of the saver?

I have ver 5.0.258 for the installer from (https://www.pdf-xchange.com/free_lite_home.html),
but 5.0.260 for the saver.

Am I correct?

Thanks.

Best wishes.

Hello Anon,

The version of the Lite driver that is not for home/academic use can indeed work in trial mode and add "DEMO" stamps to files created. The one Paul has linked you to will not do that. The current latest build is 260 indeed - and I will now check and see whether the Home/Academic installer is still at build 258 - and we will see to update that straight away.

Best,
Stefan

Thanks Anon,

It will eventually take you to the same link that Paul gave yesterday - so I am now setting up a test environment and will let you know shortly if there is a version mismatch.

Hello Anon,

I just installed the PDF XChange Lite for home use on a clean test machine that had never before had any of our products installed - and that was build 260 - so not sure why you got build 258, but please do
1) A full uninstall of all our products.
2) Reboot your machine when asked
3) download this installation file:
https://www.pdf-xchange.com/downloa ... A_LE_H.zip
4) Install from the above file and when asked - reboot a second time

And you should now have build 260 as expected.

Best,
Stefan

Hi,

How are you determining the build?

If I click on the icon pdfSaver5 lite I get the screen with 'About'

This screen says ' version: 5.0 build 260'.

Is this the screen I should be using to determine the build, rather that individual files?

From this it looks like I have the correct build despite the installer having a file version 5.0.258 0

It looks like a re-install will be unnecessary.

Thanks.

Hi Anon,

Yes the About tab is the correct place to look for the actual build installed.

If you are checking PDF files that were already created with an older build - they will contain information for the build that created them, and not for the one you actually have installed.

A reinstall is indeed not necessary! :)

Stefan

Hi,

The installer having file version 5.0.258 0 is in the PDF-XChange Lite 5 folder. However, this installer is the 4.0 driver installer version. I assume that this installer suffices for either ver 4.0 or ver 5.0 of the free suite.

A couple of other points for my future reference. I note that the suite has its own uninstall programme. Is it best to use this programme for any uninstalltion, or to use the facility within
Control Panel (Programs and Features). I used the latter previously, then needed to clear files that were still present.

I also note that there is an update utility. Does this work automatically, or must it be run manually?

Thanks

Hello Anon,

Is the file in question the "PrnInstaller.exe" one? This is indeed reported as build 258 - and we will see to fix this, but the pdfSaver5L.exe is correctly reported as build 260.

Stefan

Yes, the two files are listed on my machine as you state.

Regarding the pdf viewer folder the file versions are 2.5.201.0

I assume you agree that I have the right versions for the viewer and the Lite programme.

You did not address my other points:

'A couple of other points for my future reference. I note that the suite has its own uninstall programme. Is it best to use this programme for any uninstalltion, or to use the facility within
Control Panel (Programs and Features). I used the latter previously, then needed to clear files that were still present.

Any comments?

Hi Anon,

The Uninstall through the control panel should call the same uninstall utility - so it's up to you which way to use.

The live update tool needs you to manually initiate it before it tries to connect to our servers and check for new versions.
It currently only works for the Viewer, and we are working on making it universal - so that it checks for all Tracker Software products you have installed on your machine, but when that would be available I can't tell for now.

Best,
Stefan
