Last page visited is not (always) restored

Post by Peter 123 »

I am new to PDF-VChange Viewer and in general I am quite satisfied with it.

But there is an annoying problem:

The program does not always restore the page of a document that was viewed last before closing the document.

Let's say I closed the document at page 25. The next time - if am lucky - it opens indeed at page 25, but other times it jumps back to page 1 and sometimes to a different page somewhere between 1 and 25.

Of course I have checked the boxes at Preferences ---> Page Display ---> Initial View (Restore the last used view of document when opening)
and Preferences ---> Page Display ---> Initial Display (Restore last used layout and Zoom settings ... when opening)

I use version 2.5. (Build 201.0) on Windows 7.

Please try to correct this obvious bug. Thank you.

Hello Peter,

This is not something we've encountered with build 201, but we are currently at 2.5.203, so please try updating to the latest build first and see if the problem is still there.

If it is - are you making any modifications to those PDF files when they are not opened in our Viewer? Or are you e.g. moving the files between folders?

Best,
Stefan

Hello Stefan,

thank you for your quick answer.

No, I do not make any modifications to the PDF files nor do I move them between folders. There is no change in the files between opening them the one and the next time.

But I will try with build 2.5.203. Will it be offered when checking for updates from within the viewer? Until now is doesn't. I would prefer this method instead of installing the viewer completely new (so that all my preferences etc. will be kept).

Hi Peter,

If you used an .msi installation package the Live Updater will not work, so I would recommend you to reinstall using the .exe/.zip installer just once - and from here on the "Check For Updates" should work.

As for the settings - they should be preserved but just in case you can export them before uninstalling build 201 via the Viewer's Main Menu -> Edit -> Export all settings to data file, and then import them back from the same file after you finish installing build 203.

Best,
Stefan

Hello Stefan,

I don't remember how I installed, but the "Check for Updates" seems to work as it offers me a certain version of the Viewer Manual as available update. Only build 203 is not offered.

But anyway, I will save my settings as you described, uninstall build 201 and then install build 203.

Thanks again for your help and your information.

Hello Stefan,

the install of build 203 worked without problems and owing to your advice of exporting the settings to the data file all my settings were kept. The documents even opened exactly at the pages where I had closed them the last time when using build 201!

The restore of the pages also worked fine the following 3 or 4 times when opening (some of) the documents. But then it happened again that the viewer did not "remember" the last page (where the document had been closed) but opened the documents at the first page. This happened to all (4 or 5) documents - either I had viewed them in the meantime (proceeding in reading them) either not. So obviously there is no specific issue with a certain document but a problem that has to to with the viewer itself.

I had to remember for every document on which page I had stopped reading, go to this page manually and then to close the viewer. Now pages are restored again as they should. But I assume that after 5, 6, 7 times opening the documents the viewer will again set them back to page 1.

Hi Peter

Can you please check how many documents can be listed in 'Recents List' (go to Preferences -->General --> Opening documents --> Maximum of Documents in Resents) according to your settings. Those options you have described can be used only for the files from the 'Recents List'.

You open the files you need, set the options to restore the last viewed page and everything works OK. But then if you open some other files the number of which are bigger than the number of files in 'Resents List' - your initial files can be 'thrown away' from that list as "older" ones and no settings (e.g. page restore) will be saved in such case.

If the problem has the above explanation - please increase the number of "Recents List" files or pin the important for you files.

Regards,
Katya

Hello Katya,

I checked the number of documents in "Recents List": it is 10.

I don't think that I had exceeded this number when opening documents, but anyway I have increased it now to 25 and I will watch if the problem will be gone now.

Thank you very much for your advice.

Hi Peter,

10 is actually quite a low number of documents, and it can easily be exceeded.
the 25 you've set is a good one, but you can increase that even further (I think the default is actually 50).

Let us know if this is the fix for your problems.

Best,
Stefan

Hello Stefan + Katya,

I just wanted to inform you that obviously this action indeed fixed the problem. Since increasing the number of documents (finally I chose the number of 40  ) pages are always restored as they should do. Not even one failure.

I am happy that you could help me. Thanks again. :D
