Dimension Override

Post by thiggins »

I am an engineer and I really regard this software highly.

A convenient way to overrride a dimension text would be very useful. This has been discussed elsewhere in the forums. In architectural and engineering practice it is common to override computed dimensions. For example, one might want to round a dimension off, use architectural instead of decimal notation (1'-1 1/2" instead of 1.125 ft), or say "VERIFY" instead of providing a dimension.

To make this work only two subtle changes are needed. Currently, right-clicking on an existing dimension lets us access the Edit Label command so we can give a dimension a label. Perhaps something like "WIDTH =" was envisioned. This label could serve as the override text. The only problem is that when you do right-click > Properties > Leader Line and uncheck Show Text in Line, the label goes away with the dimension text! If you could just make so that 1) the label does not go away, and 2) the label slips down into the dimension slot when Show Text in Line is unchecked, we would have an effective dimension override feature! If anyone wants the label to go away with the dimension text they always have right-click > Delete Label.

Please give this some thought. I know many users want this feature because it responds to a very common requirement.

Thank you for the suggestions thiggins,

Yes indeed being able to rename those Labels has been requested before.
I am now checking with my colleagues if this has already been considered/implemented (for ver3 of our Viewer) - and if not - we will see to create a FR ticket for it.

Best,
Stefan

Hello thiggins,

After discussing this in the team - we've created a Feature Request ticket in our internal system:
#1431: Viewer FR: Dimension Override
So some sort of such override will be implemented in ver3 of our Viewer.
As someone in the discussion mentioned - it might be implemented for e.g. the Line tool, and the measurement tool might not be affected - but we will know more when work on this FR commences.

We will keep you updated with posts directly here in this forum topic.

Best,
Stefan
