Cannot get PDF-XChange to work in IE9

Post by tr.pdf »

I recently installed PDF-XChange under Win7 x64 and IE9 but I cannot view PDFs in IE. I looked under "Manage Add-ons" in IE and there are no entries for PDF-XChange (neither in 32- nor 64-bit IE) under "Toolbars and Extensions" (both currently loaded and all add-ons).

I ensured PDF-XChange Viewer is set to open in the browser (I reset this several times, even starting the Viewer as Administrator).

I tried the following, found elsewhere in the forum, in a cmd prompt launched as Administrator but it didn't help:

Code: Select all

"C:\Program Files\Tracker Software\PDF Viewer\PDFXCview.exe" /RegServer
regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Tracker Software\PDF Viewer\PDFXCviewAx.dll"
regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Tracker Software\PDF Viewer\PDFXCviewIEPlugin.dll"
PDFXCview.exe /makeassoc:web=true
PDF-XChange Viewer works properly from within K-Meleon (a Mozilla browser), just not IE9. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks. Trevor

Hello Trevor,

DO you have any specific security settings in IE that are different from the defaults?
Setting too high security options could influence this.

Also could you please try to reinstall our Viewer - and make sure that you select "Full Install" and also ensure that IE is not running during the reinstall process and see if this will fix the issue?

Best,

Hello Stefan,

Thanks for your response. Apologies for the delay in getting back to this.

I uninstalled the Viewer, rebooted, then installed the Viewer again as directed. I still cannot see it listed in the IE Addons, but I was able to open (within IE) a PDF file located on my local drive. However, it still does not work when attempting to view a PDF-embedded bank statement -- I just get a blank window. Interestingly, the Viewer works fine (even with bank statements) in my older K-Meleon (Mozilla-based) browser, just not in the latest IE.

I have not adjusted any security or privacy settings in IE -- they're all set to defaults.

Any suggestions? I'd prefer to use IE for bank statements, as I use K-Meleon for everyday surfing.

Thanks again,
Trevor

Hi tr.pdf,

IE9 allows you to enable/disable Add-Ins to speed up the browser. Is the PDF-XChange Add-In listed in
IE9 --> Tools --> Magage Add-Ons --> Show All Addons ?

Thanks for that Trevor,

what about 'Protected Mode'? I should have also asked that earlier. In the IE 'Internet Options --> Security' there is an option 'Enable Protected Mode' - this must be off for the Add-In to work.

Unfortunately there is little we can do to change this.

Does that make a difference?

Hi thepatsy,

we are testing in Win 8 now. It does work though I'm not sure if that was IE10 that shipped with Win 8.

Did you try installing it yourself and what kind of results did you get?

Paul -- apologies for dropping the thread almost a month ago when I found myself without spare time.

I have tried with and without Protected Mode enabled (it was enabled originally). I can open a PDF file with Protected Mode on, just not view PDF bank statements. Interestingly, PDF-XChange still does not show up in the list of Addons, even with a PDF file open.

Thanks (and apologies) again,
Trevor

Hi Trevor,

all our apps have now passed Win 8 testing and we are in the process of cleaning up a few warnings that were generated by the compliance testing. None of these relate to the IE Add-In so the only thing I can suggest is for us to attempt to reproduce the situation here.

If I understand correctly it was specifically IE9 on a 64 bit Win 8 (Preview?) machine. I will try to get to that this week.

Thanks tr.pdf

IE9 is very well used with our Add-In so it should be possible to get to the bottom of what is happening here. From what we've seen here this should be working.

What actually happens when you try to open an online PDF in IE9? Does it prompt you for anything?

We may need to take a look remotely on your system. Would you be amenable to that?

Paul

Hi both randsom and kaospolos,

thanks for the posts. Since we never did get that remote connection we never ascertained what was happening. We have, to date been unable to reproduce this here so if you are interested in working with us we may yet get to the bottom of this.

Can I ask both of you to use the "Help --> Report a Problem..." feature of the Viewer, send everything it wants to send, including the attachments and default text then also add a link to this thread in the body of the email before you send it.

With this information I can see if there is something common to both your system environments. Once I get those we'll take it from there.

Hi randsom,

I have installed a Win 7 Home Premium, patched with all the latest updates and the links you sent by email both work 'Out of the Box' with IE9.

I tested these 2 links in both 32 and 64 bit editions of IE9. From your email to us:
In IE9 this site loaded the pdf

http://www.lavote.net/Locator/ballot/791/054.PDF

In IE9 this site would not

http://www.policemotorunits.com/id279.html

still no pdf viewer in the IE9 add-ons list...........Firefox loaded both

Thanks
The Viewer Plugin won't actually show in the list of Add-Ons as it isn't really an Add-On at all - it's a plugin. The difference in definition is subtle, but do not worry that it's not listed, this is normal.

So it is not really clear to me why this is failing for you. Can you tell me if your IE is running in 'Protected Mode' or not? If so can you try the page that fails with IE set to have 'Protected Mode' off?

IE9 --> Internet Options --> Security --> Enable Protected Mode [uncheck the box]

Hi Markus, Randsom and any other users who are experiencing this issue.

We have to date, despite attempting in multiple environments, been unable to reproduce this situation. The PDF-XChange Plugin has for us in each case worked as expected.

We are keen to get to the bottom of this issue. If any of you are prepared to work with us on this we would like to have our engineers remotely connect to one of the machines that is exhibiting this behaviour and see what we can find.

If you think this is something you would be prepared to do please read this article,

https://www.pdf-xchange.com/knowled ... e-an-issue

sign the indemnity form, send it to us with your TeamViewer connection ID and Password and we'll arrange to have an engineer connect.

thanks in advance.

Hi, Paul. I apologize for abruptly leaving the thread (6 months ago, whew!), but unfortunately life events suddenly got in the way. I finally have time to return to this problem (of course, it's also because tax time is coming and I'm forced to make time for this). I'm a bit wary of remote control, though, as this problem shows up when connecting to my bank and I'm not comfortable doing that under a remote connection (no offence).

I see the v3 beta is out and about, I was wondering if that's something I should try. I recently updated to the latest v2 build to see if that resolved the issue, but no luck.

Apologies & thanks,
Trevor

Hi rt.pdf,

thanks for getting back to us. I completely understand about remote access, don't worry, you would not be the first. Can I ask you if you see the issue specifically when going to http://www.policemotorunits.com/id279.html

Also please do try the Editor and let me know if that makes any difference.

That site works fine. I did some testing and PDF-XChange appears to work under IE9 with http PDF addresses but fail with https PDF addresses. Try any PDF from here:

https://www.sans.org/reading_room/whitepapers/bestprac/

like this one: https://www.sans.org/reading_room/white ... ment_33789

That PDF opens properly in my old mozilla-based browser (K-Meleon), but with IE 9 (both 32-bit and 64-bit versions) it will download but just show a blank page. I'm using PDF-XChange Viewer 2.5.210.0.
Also please do try the Editor and let me know if that makes any difference.
Do you mean the v3 beta? Don't I need a password to download or run it?

Thanks.

Hi tr.pdf,

The Editor is no longer a beta - and indeed you can download it from here:
https://www.pdf-xchange.com/product/downloads
Thought for now the Editor doesn't have an IE plug-in so the Editor won't be able to display PDF files in any version of IE.

Best,

Problem solved! Turns out it wasn't PDF-XChange Viewer, but the IE setting "Do not save encrypted pages to disk". With that selected, the PDF from the bank would not open; with it cleared, PDF-XChange Viewer launches within IE and the bank statement appears correctly.

Sorry to have troubled you over this! Thanks very much for your time & attention in trying to solve this.
