Requiring a password each time user signs

Post by vanhoypc »

Hello! My organization has 60 employees. They each have a digital signature (.pfx file) and I need for the software to require a password each time the user signs. As of right now, it asks for a password once when I import the ID but can be signed from there out without the password. I hope that makes since and I very much appreciate any suggestions.

Thank-you so much.

HI vanhoypc,

thanks for the post and question.

I'm afraid that there is no way to force the user to have to enter a password in order to use a digital ID, especially if the file was entered into the computer's System Store. The point there is to make the cert more accessible. P

PDF-XChange will have the same behaviour as all other Windows applications in this respect.

Paul,

Thank you for the quick response. I actually have not added them to the windows store, was hoping that I could force a password each time. We've got around 12 employees that share a pc profile, (they work every 3rd day so 4 a day that share). Oh well, again I do appreciate your response!

Hi vanhoypc,

There are some certificates that come on a smart card - and some of these cards will have a software that could ask for a password every time a request to the certificate is made - so if you obtain one such - this might be a viable solution. Sorry that I can't quote any such by name.

Best,
Stefan

Okay, I figured out how to make it ask for a password each time. I have another related question. After I do sign the document I don't want it to lock it (no further modification available). Is there a way to disable this?

I hope that makes since, in other words once it is signed with your software it tells me nothing can be changed or saved to it. You would have to "save as".

Let me add some more info I just found out. It will let you edit the form with your software after it's signed, but it will not let Adobe reader edit it. I need it to be signed in your software but still be changeable in Adobe Reader. Any advice?

Thanks!

Hello vanhoypc,

You can "thank" adobe for this "feature" they've implemented in their free Reader.
As long as a PDF Form is modified with a product other than Adobe's - form editting features in their free Reader are lost.
If you have a licensed copy of the Adobe Acrobat - you will have no problems filling in other of the form fields.

There is no solution we can provide from our end I am afraid as it's Adobe that have decided to limit the functionality in their free product when it encounters a non Adobe modified file.

Best,
Stefan

Wow, you are correct. I do have Acrobat and indeed there is no trouble editing it once signed with your software. However, in my process of trying to find which software will do what I need (yours is by far my favorite so far) I have found that there are many third party software out there that when signed with there software is still functional in reader. Such as Nitro Pro. I was wondering if it was just because I was using the trial version of your software and it put those logos on the pdf is that why it locked it down? So I sent a copy of my pdf to my friend who says he has the pro version of your software but the logos are still on the pdf after I got it back? Is that normal?

Thanks again, I would love to get this 1 thing figured out and we would be ready to buy 10 licenses.

Hi vanhoypc,

can you send us the file you have? You should be able to sign a document in the Viewer and have it Open in Adobe without water marks, however depending on the file other functions may be restricted as Stefan pointed out. You should not get water marks however.

If the document is too sensitive to post on this public forum you can email it to support@pdf-xchange.com and we will keep it confidential, otherwise zip it up and post it here.

Once we have your document we will be in a better position to determine if this is expected behaviour or not.
