Embedded PDF on HTML-Page

Post by geraldh »

Hi!

First of all - thank you for the great piece of software. It is way better than Adobe Acrobat Reader :)

.. but i have experienced some strange behaviour when embedding an PDF on a HTML-page. When i installed Build 201 (~3? months ago) and opened http://acroeng.adobe.com/Test_Files/emb ... blink.html in MS Internet Explorer, i didn't see the embedded PDF at all. As soon as i clicked where the PDF should be, it got displayed. But when i clicked outside the PDF-View (somewhere else on the html-page), it disappeared again.
Some weeks later i tried to resolve this issue by installing the new Build (205). It worked on some machines (also on different operating systems: Windows XP, Windows Server 2008R2, ...) , but not on all. Installing the newest Build 206 didn't solve the problem either.

What can i try to solve this problem? Has anyone else this problem?

Greets,
Gerald

Hi Gerald,

And many thanks for your kind words! :)

I had no problems displaying your sample page, but I was asked by IE whether I want to allow the Viewer Plug-in to be launched - so maybe there are security settings on the affected machines that prevent third party plug-ins execution?

Best,
Stefan

Hi Stefan,

No, there is no security warning...
As i already said, at first the PDF isn't displayed at all. But as soon as i click on the area where it should be displayed, it gets loaded. When i click outside the PDF, then it is hidden again. Using the same HTML-Page this problem doesn't occur on all my machines...

Is there any method to re-register / repair / ... the IE-Plugin?

Gerald

Hi Gerald,
Is there any method to re-register / repair / ... the IE-Plugin?
You could certainly run the installer again but I'm not entirely convinced that it will help.

Like Stefan, from the symptoms you describe it seems to me that the issue is related to loading the plugin, though I'm not sure what settings or condition would cause this. When I load it, before I allow the PDF-Xchange plugin to be launched by IE I see this:

I know you are not getting the security warning, but in order to better understand what you are seeing you send a screen shot of your IE before you give the document focus and the plugin launches. Is it similar to this?

Here are the screenshots:
View when page is loaded: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/43 ... t01hw.jpg/
PDF XChange loaded (after hover/click): http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/54 ... ot02n.jpg/
IE-Version: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/22 ... t03ql.jpg/
PDF XChange-version: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/14 ... ot04h.jpg/

I found out that it is enough to hover the area, where the pdf should display to get it loaded...

Any suggestions what i could try?

Hi geraldh,

The first thing I'd suggest is to try build 2.5.206:
www.tracker-software.com/PDFXVwer.zip

And if that still fails - I will need to initiate a discussion with the devs.

Thanks Gerald,

ironically we released build 207 over the week end. Again from what I'm seeing it likely won't help but in order for my devs to take a look we are going to need you to be running the current build. Can you again update, this time to 207 and if the issue is still present we can take that to the devs.

I do realize that is seems a lot to keep asking you to update but I hope you can appreciate that we need you on the current version to investigate this.

Sincerely
Best regards

Hi Gerald,

I just tried to reproduce your problem once again - and am still unable to achieve that.
You said that it worked on XP and Server 2008R2, but didn't mention if the system on which it's failing is e.g. a Win7 or another?

I tried with both IE and Opera and in both the embedded PDF was displayed correctly.
We are currently at build 207 - so can you try to do a full uninstall of any older Viewer builds, reboot, and then download and install the latest build and see if that will fix the issue with embedded PDFs in browser. Please also make sure to have IE (and nay other browser) completely stopped before performing the reinstallation routine.

Best,
Stefan

Hi,

lets try it once again. I've now installed the latest build on a Windows Server 2008R2 (in a VMWare Virtual Machine), where exactly the described behaviour occurs. Would it help if i give you access to the machine via VNC / TeamViewer, so you can have a look at it?

Hello Gerald,

Thanks for coming back and offering us to connect to such a test machine. I will need to speak with our devs so that we can schedule a suitable time, and we will then post back here in this topic.

Please also take a look at this KB article
https://www.pdf-xchange.com/knowledgebase/357
As we are now requiring you to give us written permission before we can connect.

Best,
Stefan

Hi Gerald.

We have found what causes the problem - MSI installer did not write one entry in the registry during the installation of the IE plugin.
As a workaround for now you can create a file with extension .reg with the content provided below run it on affected machines with Admin rights.

We will fix this issue with MSI installer in the next build. Thanks for your help and apologize for any inconvenience.
