Viewing PDFs side by side
We are running PDF XChange Viewer 2.5 (Build 205.0) on Windows 7 Professional 64 bit. Just had a user ask how he could view two PDFs side by side. PDF XChange Viewer will only open one instance so we can't have two instances running side by side. And if we open two PDFs inside one instance of PDF XChange Viewer, the Cascade and Tile commands under the Window command are greyed out. His workaround at the moment is to open one PDF in Acrobat Reader and the other PDF in PDF XChange Viewer. But it would be better if we could do this directly with PDF XChange Viewer. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Ken

HI ketter,
you can set PDF_XChange either to allow multiple instances or turn off tabs which will allow tile. See this article for details and let me know if you need anything further: https://www.pdf-xchange.com/knowled ... de-by-side

Paul,
Thanks! I should've done some searching first. Some days are just too busy.

You also must be running the program as an administrator as I found out after trying The instructions in the help file for fifteen minutes with no success. I knew that the first thing to try with a program with greyed out selections is to ensure you are running as an administrator but I do occasionally have a senior moment.

There should be no need for you to be running the application in Admin mode at all ....
If posting files to this forum - you must archive the files to a ZIP, RAR or 7z file or they will not be uploaded - thank you.

Maybe not, however, no matter how many times I tried to open a second instance, it failed until I right clicked and chose run as administrator. Subsequent attempts required no such requirement.John - Tracker Supp wrote:There should be no need for you to be running the application in Admin mode at all ....
Running win 7, 64 bit on a Dell laptop and have had no further difficulties.

I guess some things just defy explanation - or at least do not warrant the effort to do so, pleased all is well now

Re: Viewing PDFs side by side
We are brand new to PDF Viewer - we are just rolling it out this week!
Everyone in our firm has dual monitors. The information above shows how to open two PDF documents in horizontal or vertial view. Is there a way that you can click and drag one of the PDFs to a second monitor, or to have the program open multiple times?
Thanks!

Hi marsam,
welcome to the forums.
Indeed you can do this. We also use multiple monitors here. What you want is to "Allow Multiple Instances"
Take a look here for details: https://www.pdf-xchange.com/knowled ... the-viewer

At least in my system the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Tracker Software\PDFViewer\General key has the Full Control permission for my account set but the RESTRICTED USER group only has Read permission enabled.egpor95 wrote:Maybe not, however, no matter how many times I tried to open a second instance, it failed until I right clicked and chose run as administrator. Hi huusa,
I'm not 100% sure on that reg key permission but I would suggest uninstalling the Viewer, deleting C:\Program Files\Tracker Software as well as HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Tracker Software and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Tracker Software to get a truly clean state then restarting and reinstalling?
If you have nothing on your system that is running interference on the registry then this should give you default settings including the rights to launch multiple instances.

Re: Viewing PDFs side by side
I was thinking that anyone who is experiencing this problem should check that they have the permission to modify the pertinent key. Reinstalling would of course reveal whether the installer is able to grant the necessary permissions. I would guess that domain administrators may choose almost arbitrary permission schemes for users. I have seen two kinds: one where software is distributed by running installers when user logs into Windows as a restricted user of the domain, and another in which all domain users are local administrators and the Configuration Manager runs installers while the user is logged on.
I have had similar problems with other software.
