PDF-Xchange Viewer 2.5, build 210.0
Windows 7 Pro (64 bit)
I am having an intermittent problem with the preview of PDF files when I click on them in a Windows Explorer window having the preview pane activated.
When the problem is in play, clicking on the file does not immediately display a preview. Instead, the window becomes unresponsive (I cannot select files with the mouse, move files with cut/paste, etc.) for some time. This can be as long as a half a minute.
I cannot predict when the problem will crop up or how long it will last.
I searched for threads describing this problem but did not find a solution.

Does this happen on the same files, and are those files heavy ones that also take some time to load in the Viewer or is it just random files that cause this?

While the problem is in play, it happens on all PDF files regardless of weight. Not just the files in that particular folder, either. If I open a new Explorer window on a new folder containing PDFs, the problem occurs.

So it's not just a particular file that causes this behaviour of our SE. May I ask which is the Anti virus (AV) product you are using?

Antivirus is Avast Pro 8.0.1483.

thanks for the info. - could you advise on your system specs? (i.e. 4GB RAM, AMD A8-500 APU processor, dual core etc.) It's possible that this could be related to your performance specs, as the only time of I've ever heard of such an issue with the Shell Extensions (preview handler) was with a user who had a Win XP (different that yours, I know), dual core processor and 3GB of use-able RAM. It may help to increase the system memory allowance from within the Viewer - Edit --> Preferences --> Performance.
Also, it could help to try re-installing the program - please try using this link:

H-P brand tower with AMD Athlon II X4 640 3GHz, 4 GB RAM.
I will reinstall the software and report back on the result. As I say it's an intermittent problem: so reinstalling may solve the problem temporarily.

Thanks for the info. - that sounds like it should be fine, but I'll ask the Developers for their opinion on whether or not that should be sufficient.
Also, if the re-install doesn't work, please try allocating a higher memory use-age allowance, as previously suggested, and see if that helps.

Reinstalling had no immediate effect on the problem. After reinstalling, logging out and back in left me with working preview panes. I suppose there is a helper executable which gets stopped and restarted over a logout/login. I will report back if the problem returns, and at that point I will also try the memory adjustment.
