Page Down scroll

Post by davews »

Using v2.5.210.0 and with both continuous and single page mode I find Page Down and Page Up keys scroll precisely one screen's worth. I find I often have to scroll back one line so as to not lose my place when reading, especially if Page Down puts the boundary half way through the line of text. Hope I have explained this properly. Is it possible to adjust the number of lines that the reader scrolls with the PgDn key? I would prefer it to be just less than the height of the visible page so that the line at the bottom of the page becomes the top line of the scrolled down page.

By the way, I can see no difference between continuous and single page mode in any way, how are these intended to work?

I concur absolutely, this is an important issue when using the pagedown/pageup keys to read long documents.

Wordpad or Notepad, and most word-processors have always done the right thing here, and show the last line of the previous view as the first line of the next view, so its just very slightly less than a full 100% screen down. WordPerfect actually had a "Screen Down" command, as opposed to a Page Down command, which would go to the top of the next page.

There is a difference between single page and continuous mode. Check again.

The new PDF-XChange Editor suffers from the same problem as the PDF-XChange Viewer. I tend to use the scroll-wheel for reading, as the pagedown/pageup keys are useless for the reasons that you stated.

Opera Browser used to do this right prior to version 12.xx — but then they introduced a new behaviour to be the same as other browsers like FF and Chrome. These screen down by 87.5% or 90% of a screen which is just as bad as 100% for reading long articles. The reader has to search the previous line about 4 or 5 lines down from the top of the view port.

This is the official response from an Opera developer giving his reasons why he changed the behaviour:

Adobe Reader doesn't seem to be much better than PDF-XChange here — it sometimes shows the last line, but may also split it. Foxit Reader gets it right, and Sumatra overdoes it by one line.

Thanks guys for the discussion on this.

I've asked the Lead Viewer developer if there is a possability to make an option for full page or one line less. I don't know if there was a specific reason for doing it the way we do or even if it is practical to offer an option here but hopefully we'll get some feedback from the team.

Thanks Paul and others for the comments. I can now see why I used Foxit for a long time and thought it was better than PDFX....

I have modified behavior of the Editor (not the viewer) on handling PageUp/PageDown and now it scrolls the page leaving some portion of previous visible area.
It will be available in the next build of the Editor.

Another user here not happy with the current PgDown behavior of pdf xchange. I highly prefer xchange over other pdf viewers but whenever I am happen to read a long document, I get annoyed when pressing PgDown or spacebar.

Good to see that the issue has been raised in the official forums and heard by the developers. I request this change to made in xchange viewer as well (in addition to editor).

Hi ahaider7,

it's been promised for the Editor but I can't promise it for the Viewer. The Editor is slated to replace the Viewer and as such it doesn't make a lot of sense to repeat the work in a product that is to be replaced. Your suggestion has been heard, it will ultimately be up to the Development Team Leader to make that call.

Thanks for reply Paul.
I wasn't aware that editor is going to replace viewer. When is that going to happen. Any ETA?

With all the missing features in Editor I feel it will be some time before it can replace Viewer. Let us hope that updates continue to be done to Viewer at least for the moment. It sounds like the modification to the page down scroll would be a fairly minor one so can we request it is implemented in Viewer.

I did try Editor but soon came back to Viewer. 'Gold release' is pushing the line just a little...

Hi All,

ahaider7 - the Editor should be ready to replace the viewer in a build or two if all goes well, but the final decision is for the dev team and our CEO to make when that replacement will happen.

davews - I believe that only security and bug fixes would be added in the Viewer from here on, and no new or changed functionality will be implemented I am afraid.

Best,
Stefan
