Build 303 - Observations

Post by srn123 »

Wow, Build 303 is one great step forward for feature consistency with the Viewer. Thanks for the update which brings us closer to using the Editor as a replacement for the Viewer.

Some of the few remaining features that I notice that are yet to be supported which I am sure will get in over the next couple of releases.
- Session restore
- Toolbar customization
- Preferences options for General settings, file associations, Commenting options etc
- No straightforward way by which current page size can be seen

I noticed a crash when I was doing the following. Was repeatable with any PDF document.
- Open any document.
- Go to Edit mode (Edit Content Tool), if not already in that mode.
- Have the Properties Toolbar enabled. (Ctrl-E)
- Select any text by multi-clicking it (or click select some text) and then select 'Properties' from the Properties toolbar above the tab list.
- Editor crashes.
This behavior seems to be only while trying to get properties of text by selection when the properties pane is not visible. If the Properties Pane were already open (Ctrl-` (or) View>Other Panes>Properties Pane), it works fine.

Is there any way by which I can visually see the Layout of the output format for summarizing comments like in PDF viewer, which was very intuitive? Editor does that with simple text drop down.

While on the topic of summarization of comments, I notice that I am not able to see the source text as a part of the summarized document. I can see only the comments and the lines pointing to the source portion, but there are no source portions of the document that show up. This doesn't happen for all documents. I am enclosing a sample document where I see this problem. I already have a few comments added. In Editor when I do a 'Summarize Comments' with the Layout as 'Document and comments with connector lines on single page' and 'Skip pages without comments', I get 3 pages where I can see the connector lines and the comments, but the original text is not visible on the left hand side. If I save the summarized file and open it in Acrobat Reader, it gives an error message.

Minor text corrections. Edit>Preferences>Forms, spelling of Highlight is mis-spelt twice.

Hello RamNarayan S,

Thanks for your comments. Indeed those 4 things that you've pointed are going to be added in upcoming builds.

As for the crash - I tried several times and could not reproduce it at my end - with the properties toolbar open or closed - it never crashed for me. The Page Properties pane that opened is not working correctly indeed - but the Viewer is still responsive and I can close the pane, and continue working with the file. Which version of Windows are you using?

The Summarize comments also needs a few final touches, and I believe the preview would be added in some form.
I could also reproduce the issue with the blank contents page and so I created a ticket for our devs to fix:
#1927: Editor 3.0.303: Issue with summarize contents - Blank original page shown.

Regards,
Stefan

I am using Windows XP SP3. I am able to reproduce the crashes repeatedly. I see the properties pane come up on the right hand side (no content inside though) and then the program crashes. If I already have the Properties pane (on the right hand side) open, it works fine.

The error signature for the crash indicates the following when the error report dialog to tell Microsoft about the problem is posted.
AppName: pdfxedit.exe AppVer: 3.0.303.0 ModName: pdfxeditcore.x86.dll
ModVer: 3.0.303.0 Offset: 00257110

Thanks,
RamNarayan S

@Tracker support
Just for your information, the crash is also reproducable in Windows 7 (32-bit Home edition):
After clicking on a certain paragraph of text to edit it, you must also select a piece of text in this paragraph.
When you then click on the Properties button, you will see that a transparant Properties window will shortly come up, followed by the message "PDF-XChange has stopped working".

Hi Willy Van Nuffel,

Thanks for the report. May I ask you if you are using an interface language other than English in the Editor when these crashes happen?

Stefan

Reproduced in Win 8 x64 English default - I don't think this is related to the language.

There is a ticket for this RT#1931 Build 303 - Observations

Don't know if it still can be of any help, but the language of my PDF-XChange Editor version 3.0 (build 303.0) is English.
