PrintScaling document property/pref isn't honored

Post by DR_LaRRY_PEpPeR »

Hi!

I've been using PDF-XChange Viewer for 2-3 years after getting tired of Adobe's Reader. :)

I noticed back in December (yes!) that the Viewer didn't honor the PrintScaling=None setting within PDFs when testing a template that needs to be precise without print scaling/Fit to margins/etc. Same result with the Editor. (Firefox's own PDF.js viewer also had this problem at the time, but it's been fixed I think. Chrome's is OK. Other PDF viewers were also broken, except Adobe.)

I wasn't messing with printing templates and thinking about it again until the summer, and never came around to post about it. :o Back then I wondered if the Viewer would still get updates or not (and it's had a couple of course). Now I was just checking if there was a new version for a fresh install, and saw the announcement about the Editor! :D Thought I'd finally register quick and post/ask about this, although I'm sure it won't be fixed in the Viewer :( (assuming it is in Editor ;)).

Thanks!

Hi DR_LaRRY_PEpPeR,

Thanks for the post and welcome to the forums - could you try this with the Editor and let me know if the issue persists?

Thanks Will. :)

Yeah, I said I had the same result with the Editor back in the summer... In case it might have changed since then, I just installed from your download link. Yes, same result.

At first I thought it might be honoring it (I believe that happened last time), but it merely seems the initial Print Scaling setting is None in the Editor (vs Fit to margins in Viewer I think). Once it's set to something else, that setting is remembered, and the PDF's PrintScaling=None doesn't force the Print dialog back to None (like Adobe).

I see that Document Properties > Advanced does show None under "Print Dialog Presets." :) (vs Default for other PDFs.)

Hi Larry,

I've just done a test and haven't been able to reproduce this - are there any other steps that might be important, or perhaps a sample file that I can use to test this?

Cheers, let me know!

Hey, sorry for the LATE reply! And kinda forgot about it this week... :?

Anyway, just so we're clear -- you're saying you're testing a document that contains PrintScaling=None, and that forces the Viewer/Editor Print dialog to the "None" option? (Even when a different setting had been used (remembered) previously?)

I'm NOT saying that the Viewer/Editor doesn't honor the None setting when it's selected however (e.g. printing wrong or such), if there was any confusion. :) I'm assuming that all works fine, since I don't have a way to print now, other than the Lite driver...

I'm using the TCPDF library to create the documents. Do you want a sample containing PrintScaling=None? I think even a blank page will reproduce...

Hello DR_LaRRY_PEpPeR,

If you can indeed .zip and upload a test file here that would help us investigate!

Cheers,
Stefan

Back again! It took awhile to create this complex example  -- no, it's just a blank page, which does indeed show the behavior fine. Maybe PrintScaling=None IS honored in some cases, and my generated PDFs have something else "wrong" or non-standard that, in combination, makes it be ignored...? Kinda have doubts about that, but let me know if you find something else I can/should change somehow.

Again, you can see None in the Document Properties, but that does NOT force the actual Print dialog to "None" (it just has what was used previously, etc.).
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Myself I have been working with PDF's allready for years and I was not aware of that "Page Scaling" parameter...

Maybe it needs a little bit more clarification for everyone who's reading this...
You can find the parameter "Page Scaling" in Adobe Reader XI and PDF-XChange Editor via File > Document Properties > Advanced. In PDF-XChange Viewer there seems not to be a way to view it (there is no Advanced-tab).

When this parameter is set to "None" (instead of "Default") for a specific PDF-file, then the Page Scaling should also turn to "None" in the Print-dialogbox when this PDF is being printed.

(For as far as you can trust on me):
PDF-XChange Editor (build 306) and Viewer (build 213) DO NOT respect this parameter.
Adobe Reader XI does... It's "Page Sizing & Handling" in the Print dialogbox returns to "Actual size" when I open the sample Test.PDF and I am going to print it.

Hello DR_LaRRY_PEpPeR,

Thanks for the bump. I just tested and build 307.2 seems to be setting this parameter to None (or Default) correctly, and the changed value is recognized in Adobe's products, but just as Willy says - it's not respected in our own Editor. I made a ticket:
#2345: Document Specific "Print Scaling" is ignored when printing through Editor (but is correctly set)
That will allow us to track and fix this in a timely manner.

Regards,
Stefan
