Large files opening slowly

Post by bbi-man »

When opening 60MB to 80MB pdf's with dozens of links per page, a file can take around 90 seconds to open on an Intel Dual Core 2.26GHz machine. The same file may only take 10-12 seconds on my Intel Core I-5 3.5GHz machine. With Adobe Reader XI (gag) on either of these machines, the same files open to quickly to even measure.

Are there any settings that can improve how quickly these large pdf's will open?

Hi bbi-man,

Thanks for the post and welcome to the forums!

Could you send screen-shots of the System dialogue, in the Control Panel from both machines, as well as a sample file?

Cheers, let me know!
If posting files to this forum, you must archive the files to a ZIP, RAR or 7z file or they will not be uploaded.
Thank you.

Hi Will,

I tried to attach a sample file that was demonstrating the problem, but it far exceeds the 5 MiB limit for this forum. I have no problem with files small enough to be uploaded on this forum. As I indicated in my prior post, the problem files (all the files I use) are in the tens of MiB. MY primary test file is 51.44 MiB. Do you have an alternate way for me to send it to you? I could post it on a private page on my web site for you to download if you don't have a better alternate method.

For further clarification, the opening speed does not necessarily correspond directly to the file size. For example, my slowest file is the 51.44 MiB one, but another 79.4 MiB file opens in one-fourth the time. When files are opening slowly, the "Gathering Annotations" progress bar is just creeping. I suspect that in comparing these two files, the smaller one would have far more bookmarks/links than the larger one, just by nature. All of my files (seven of which comprise a 12,000-page "book") have tens of thousands of bookmarks/links.

I presume by "System dialogue" in Control Panel, you mean the Control Panel>System and Security>System screen (Win 7), or the Control Panel>System and Maintenance>System screen (Win Vista)? Please confirm. On the assumption this is what you want, I have attached two files of these screen captures from the slower (Toshiba) and faster (no-brand) computers.

Hi bbi-man,

Thanks for getting back to me -
I presume by "System dialogue" in Control Panel...
That's correct, though I'm not seeing that attachments that you mentioned - please make sure to wrap them in a ZIP folder or RAR/7Zip archive first.

As for the sample file - are you able to compress them to under 30MB? If so, then you could send them to support@pdf-xchange.com, with a link back to this topic. If not, then could you email the above address and I'll send the credentials to upload to our public FTP server.

Hi Will,

The problem file will not compress that much (only to 48 MiB), so I will email to get the credentials sent.

My mistake on the screen captures, had not put them in a zip folder. Should be attached now.

Hi bbi-man,

Thanks for those, they're exactly what I needed- it's unlikely that the issue is hardware related on the Windows 7 machine, as it appears to be a pretty well spec'd PC. Ordinarily, I would suspect that the issue is hardware related, on the laptop, given its specs, but the fact that Adobe loads the file quicker on it and that the problem spans multiple machines, says otherwise. I'll look at the files, once you've managed to upload them to the FTP server and will post back our findings.

Hi Will,

Zip folder was sent. Find in it zip file "BM5 DX Vol 1.zip", which contains sample file "BM5 DX Vol 1.pdf".

I suspected hardware except that the same file had been opening fine (virtually instantaneous) with Reader XI on a wide range of machines. On the 10 or so machines I've set up with PDF-XChange Viewer, the opening times for the test file ranged from 0m12sec to 2min38sec. PDF-XChange Viewer is so much better in all other ways that I would like to be recommending it to all of the people worldwide that purchase my publication, but right now I'm worried about blowback about the file-opening speed (performance is fantastic once the file opens).

Just FYI, I found out about PDF-XChange Viewer on an Adobe User Forum on the topic of Adobe's abandonment of support for the "Previous View" function when the previous view had been in a different file than the current file. Although I went looking for an alternative for just this one shortcoming, I was amazed by all the other superior features of the Tracker product.

Hi bbi-man,

I've taken a look at the file and I'm definitely experiencing the same thing, just to a lesser degree. I've created out an internal development ticket for this issue, to track the progress. For reference, this ticket number is RT-2047.

One of us will post back when we know more.

Hi Will,

Thanks for the followup. Off the grid for a the next few days, so any delay to next post does not indicate loss of interest.

Hi bbi-man,

No worries - glad to do so!

As for being off the grid - again, no worries. It will likely be a little while before I'm able to comment anything further, given that the commercial release of the Editor is scheduled for later today and the high priority status of other tickets/issues.

It's also worth noting that, as the Editor is Version 3 of the Viewer and will, after today, be replacing it (meaning that the Viewer will no longer be supported by the Dev. Team), this is something that won't be fixed in the Viewer, but will be fixed for the Editor instead.

Hi Will,

Just FYI, all this thread has been futile as Editor (build 305) completely lacks support for Previous View and Next View (even when the view is within the same file!). Having done extensive research on this, PDF-XChange Viewer was the last pdf viewer available to support Previous View when the previous view was in a different file. With Viewer being killed off and Editor missing this feature, I've got no reason to make the brand switch since other brands still support this critical feature (at least within the same document).

Of course I'll make the feature request on the Editor forum, but it was requested there in a May 26, 2013, and at that time assurances were given the feature would migrate from Viewer to Editor in a "not too distant build".

Sigh,

Hi bbi-man,

I've actually just been told that this is something that should be included in build 306 which, if all goes well, is planned for this Friday.

Cheers, hope that helps!

Will,

Thanks. Just got than info about the 306 build in response to an email I sent to info@tracker-software.com. BTW, Editor opens my files on the same machine faster than Viewer, so the issue appears to already have been addressed. On my fastest machine, the test file I sent you opens in 1-2 seconds in Editor when it took 12-13 seconds in Viewer.
