Dialogue - Page insert

Post by Peter2 »

I know that for the Viewer there will no big development, but maybe this concerns the Editor too ..

The dialogue for "Page insert" displays the opened files - but if the filenames are loooong (printed from Internet ..) then the names seem to be the same. And there is no popup or scrolling to display the entire filenames - see attachment.

Hi Peter,

Thanks for the post - I'm afraid that I'm having trouble reproducing this here. Could you send some example files that demonstrate this behaviour?

Cheers,

Hi Will

- open the attached PDF
- "Document - Extract Page 1"
- "Document - Extract Page 2"
- now you have three files open ..
- "Document - Insert Pages - From already opened documents -> Here you see the problem (Win 7 x64, Classic Theme)

Hi Peter,

Thanks for that, but even when testing this on a clean Windows 7 Professional x64 machine, I wasn't able to reproduce this problem. Could you tell what specific 'flavour' of Windows 7 you are using?

Also, please advise as to what build of the Editor you are using?

Hi Will

sorry for confusion, but I'm talking about Viewer, not Editor. But Editor has already the improvements which I wished for Editor - a dynamic size of the filed for file names. If you test it with Viewer you will see the fifference.

Hi Peter,

I apologize for the misunderstanding, I must have misread your initial post, so thanks for clearing that up.

I've just retested this on my Win 8 machine and on a clean Win 7 VM with the Viewer and am still unable to reproduce this on my machine. It's certainly odd, but I would first suggest that you try re-installing the Viewer, as it could just be a one-off anomally.

Failing that, I'm afraid that unless the issue is present for you in the Editor, there is little to nothing that I can do to help.

So for you the Viewer behaves like the Editor - it displays a wide area where the long filenames are displayed without truncation?

Hi Peter,

That's correct, no truncation and the names are displayed correctly, they're not displayed as identical files as they were in your screen-shot.

Is the behaviour the same in the Editor, for you, or does it display correctly in the Editor?

Strange... I will reinstall the viewer again.

The Editor displays it OK (full path and file ..)

Thanks - lets close this case.

Hi Will and Peter2,

I would only like to say that the problem in the Viewer is reproducable just if you make these filenames long enough !!
In the sample file sent by Peter2 the name just fits into the box. If you make that name still a little bit longer, it does not fit anymore.

What I do remark is that in the 'print screen' of the German version (see attachment of the first post in this topic), the name of the PDF-files is preceded by "Pages from [".
That is not the case in my English version 2.5.214

I hope this information can help a little bit, eventhough the problem itself is not present in the Editor:
if the filenames are too long (in the Editor dialogbox), then the textbox is extended and passes the dialogbox' border.

Regards.

Hi Willy,

Thanks for the post - I'm able to make the file names too long to fit and that's not a bug, as both the Editor and the Viewer display enough of the file name for users to gather which file is being selected.

I'm simply not able to reproduce the issue in Peter's first screen-shot, which is that files with very long names display with identical names in a specific field of the dialogue ("From Already Opened Documents").

Cheers,

I just updated to 2.5.214 and nothing changed:
- extracted pages get the prefix "Pages from .." (also in German version - not translated)
- long filenames are truncated, and if I use similar files ("looooooog1.pdf", "looooooog2.pdf") the seem to be the same because the last part is not displayed.

It seems like the three of us are seeing different things ?

In attachment a ZIP with a print screen of the Viewer's dialogbox "Insert Pages" and a few (forced) too long file names.

50/50, comparing my screenshot from first posting.

- Identical: The long file names are not displayed at the end.
- Different: I have "Pages from .." in my file list, you not.

I said "the three of us", meaning that Will sees no problem at all.

After re-reading his last answer, I understand finally that he is "able to make the file names too long to fit", but I hope that he understands that we are giving samples of file names where the (very long) name is identical except the very last end of it (at the right side of it's name). So another exemple to make it very clear:

1) AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA_1.pdf
2) AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA_2.pdf

Will, are you finally able to reproduce our problem (in the Viewer) with this knowledge ?

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the extra info. - I guess my names were a little too individual, as I didn't have names that were quite similar enough for me to notice the problem. In the Editor, the drop-down has been extended so that using your naming convetion, Willy, (AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA_1 and AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA_2) the full names are displayed, so I'd suggest trying the Editor:

Hope that helps!

Didn't we already say that the Editor does NOT have this problem ?

I know, it is not always easy when doing support, but please try to read your clients messages more carefully.
I'm talking out of experience, because sometimes I make this same error myself !
So, no blame on you !

Hi Willy,

I was simply reiterating a past suggestion in an attempt to close an ongoing case.

Only critical bugs are being are being fixed in the Viewer as it has been replaced by the Editor (as I'm sure you're aware), this is not one considered critical and no changes will be made to this area in the Viewe.
