You used to offer a portable version of PDF-XChange Viewer Pro which I used all the time. Now with the newer PDF-XChange Editor there does not seem to be a portable version. Are you planning on releasing a portable version of this anytime I went ahead and created a portable instance of PDF-XChange Editor and it seems to work fine. However, the issue I'm having is regarding the plug-in for my browser.
I use Firefox v27.0.1 (32-bit version) and that is portable too. The plug-in does not show up in Firefox at all. Where can I download this plug-in or how do I install that I can use it in my portable version of Firefox
If I install PDF-XChange Editor normally (not run the portable version I created) and set it as my default PDF viewer, the plug-in shows up to Firefox portable - great! But I don't want it installed as I need to use from my thumb drive. I also have made sure the set the portable version of PDF-XChange Editor (again, that I created) as my default PDF viewer, but that doesn't seem to help. Somehow, I'm just missing that plug-in and can't view PDFs withing FF using your application.
Normally neither of the portable versions will work as plug-ins as for this you need registry entries - which portable apps should not do.
I can suggest you to try to copy the npPDFXEditPlugin.x86.dll file from C:\Program Files\Tracker Software\PDF Editor to your portable FF plug-ins folder, though I don't think it will work as this plug-in will rely on other registry entries (that are not there) to tell it which application to start.
Thank you Stefan. I did put the plugin DLL into the Firefox Data\Plugin folder (for my Firefox portable installation) and it did see it! However, I can't choose the option in Firefox of having it open a PDF "within the browser" using Firefox. I can choose to open it using PDF-XChange Editor, but basically it downloads and then opens it - not quite the same. I believe this would work if I could put that registry information in my registry. Do you know what that might be?
I can make a portable app have access to the file system and registry, but as you mentioned - it's not normal. But I could at least make an exception for this. I would very much like to use PDF-XChange editor with my browser using the portable version. Any help on the registry data would be greatly appreciated. Also, perhaps in the future, it would be nice if Tracker Software would provide a separate tiny install to install this plugin to a portable browser along with the registry entries.
What are the options you can see in the portable FireFox under Tools -> Options -> Applications -> PDF - the dropdown menu on the right side?
Do you have a "Use <any pdf application name> (in Firefox)" as an option?
Yes, since here at work I have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed, so I do have the option "Use Adobe Acrobat (in Firefox)" for PDF. It's interesting how the portable version of Firefox can see the Adobe Acrobat (I guess because it's actually installed). Before I asked these questions, I selected "Use Other" and then chose the EXE for my portable version of PDF-XChange Editor. It works, just that I don't have an option to open the PDF "in Firefox."
I does definitely make sense that Firefox can use the Adobe plugin, if it's installed, as this would write to the Windows Registry. Without allowing exceptions to allow/force the 'Portable' Editor to write to the Registry, it's unlikely that Firefox will be able to use its browser plugin.
Also, I feel that I should point out, that if the Editor has been modified in such a way as to allow it to be portable, we cannot, at this time, support its use. There is some testing that has to be done before we can officially release and support a portable version of the Editor.
Cheers,
