New Document From Image without re-encoding JPG?

When I create a PDF from a JPG file via New Document >> From Image File(s) it seems that PDF-XChange Editor re-encodes the image. For example, if I start with a 10 MB truecolor JPG file, the resulting PDF generated by Editor is 5.4 MB, clearly re-compressed by the PDF engine.

The Images To PDF import dialog has options that seem to control this behavior, but they don't. I have tried every setting in Images To PDF Options >> Image Compression and the resulting PDF is always the same. I have tried un-checking Compression Enabled, changing the type to Auto, Flate, etc., and the resulting output PDF is always the same size.

Ideally I would like to create PDFs from JPG files without re-encoding the image at all, but I would settle for some control over how my image files are compressed to generate the PDF.

I'm on version 5.5 (build 309.0) and I have a PRO license.

Thank you for the post. I am not able to reproduce this behavior. I created a pdf from an image file, and made sure I choose compression. The result was 504KB. When I chose no compression, the result was 6.75MB. The original was 1.25MB. Is this the issue you are seeing?

We will add an option to preserve original image encoding when possible. Unfortunately it is not always possible because images in PDF are stored in own format, but it should be possible for most JPEG files.

Thank you for your responses, Ivan and Patrick. I realize that preserving image quality is not always possible (e.g., a TIFF can't be wrapped natively in a PDF and therefore conversion is necessary), but it would be wonderful to preserve JPG encoding without re-compression.

As for my other issue (import image compression settings not working), I must have been doing something wrong. I tried creating a PDF from a JPG with several compression options and the file sizes varied, so the options are working. That being said, it would still be best to preserve the JPG data stream where possible without subjecting it to re-compression.
