Why Destinations instead of Bookmarks?

I did my homework: Read the manual, searched this forum, scanned the FAQ. Please allow me to now ask the question: Why would you use Destinations instead of Bookmarks? The only comment that I could find is that Destinations stick to the page no matter where it is moved in the document or if pages are inserted or deleted before it. However, the same statement applies to Bookmarks so I am wondering what is the difference between the two. Or, more accurately, what is the functionality added by Destinations? Any enlightenment would be appreciated.

Destinations (section 12.3.2 in PDF Specification available on Adobe's site) describe position in the document: page, optionally position on the page, zoom level and zoom mode.
Bookmarks (or Outlines in PDF Specification terms, section 12.3.3) is a tree-like structure of named elements each of these elements might have associated list of actions, and in most cases the only action in those lists is an action that uses a destination to jump to a specific place in the document.
