FIND Not Working; Newest Version Won't Work
I'm running XP SP3, using PDF-XChange Viewer 2.5.214.2 Portable.
When I attempt to search for text in some documents, it fails to find the text, though I can see it on the page. Is there any way to correct this?
Also, after downloading the latest version (309) portable) and extracting it, when I double click on the exe file there is a short delay but the program does not open.
Any ideas on the above?

Hi Br4,
Thanks for the post - could you please download and try the Editor?
https://www.pdf-xchange.com/PDFXVE5.zip
The Viewer has been replaced by the Editor and is therefore no longer supported.

Re: FIND Not Working; Newest Version Won't Work
Thank you for your reply.
I downloaded the Editor, but couldn't get it to load. First, I tried the PDFXVE5.exe: nothing happened. Then I tried the PDFXVE5.x86.msi version: I get a box with this message: "PDF-XChange Editor Setup Wizard ended prematurely...because of an error".
I am the only person using this PC and I have complete admin rights, and no problems with other software.
Is it possible that the PDF file that I'm trying to do the Find in has that capability blocked?

Hi br4,
That's extremely strange. I will need to speak with the Developers regarding the installation issues, on Tuesday (Monday is a holiday here).
With regards to the search issue, could you please upload a sample document that you see this with?

Re: FIND Not Working; Newest Version Won't Work
It is strange that I can't install the latest version of the Editor and, as I previously noted, the latest Portable version does not work on my PC.
I've attached a file that I just tried to do a search/find in, without success.
Thank you for your help.

Re: FIND Not Working; Newest Version Won't Work
Hi br4,
Thanks for the file - the reason that you can't search the PDF is because it doesn't contain any actual text, just an image of text. You would need to use the OCR (Document --> OCR Pages) feature to make this text selectable/searchable.
With regards to the installation/running the program. Are you having issues with any other applications at all? Is any anti-virus software running?

Re: FIND Not Working; Newest Version Won't Work
Thanks for the OCR advice. I had tried installing the OCR base, but since I'm using the Portable version, the OCR base wouldn't install. I just found the Portable OCR, downloaded it, and it's working great. I guess the contents of the PDF file (i.e., the text) depends on how it is created.
I am using Avira anti-virus software and have no issues with other software.
Will the Editor, which has now replace the Viewer, be made available in Portable mode?
Thanks very much for your help.

Hello br4,
We do have a portable Editor in mind, but for now I do not have any specific info on which build this is planned for.
Regards,
Stefan

Re: FIND Not Working; Newest Version Won't Work
Hi All,
Many thanks for your answers to my questions; I've successfully used the Find feature.
As I noted, my preference is for a portable application, so I'm hoping you'll develop one for the Editor.
Also, I can't get the Editor to install. After unzipping the file and double clicking the EXE file there is a short pause but no activity. I'm using XP Pro SP3, and I did try to run it in Safe Mode.
Any suggestions as to what the issue might be?

Hi Br4,
Thanks for the post - could you please try running the installer again, but this time deselect the options to view PDF's in browser and make the Editor the default (these can be set afterwards, through the application UI) and see if that helps?

Re: FIND Not Working; Newest Version Won't Work
I am also having the same issue installing the new version on a fully patched 32-bit Windows XP SP3 machine.
I have tried the .EXE, the .ZIP, and the .MSI installers, and none work.
The .EXE installer gives me a "floating point" error almost immediately, and the .MSI gives me the "ending prematurely" message. The "Live Update" also fails.
I have turned off (including at the services level) all security software, uninstalled the older version and checked that all references have been removed from the system (files, folders, registry) and it still fails.
I am wondering if there is some IE8 compatibilty piece that is causing it to fail...

Hi jwoods,
is it specifically the find that doesn't work? It sounds like you have other issues?

Sorry for the confusion Paul.Paul - Tracker Supp wrote:Hi jwoods,

I am referring to the installation issues on a WinXP SP3 machine that "br4" is having with the new version.
I am experiencing the same issues.
Everything worked fine in the previous version of Viewer.

Replying to Will:
I cannot get the EXE file to even begin the install, so there are no options to select or not select. As I noted, when I double click on the EXE file, there is a short pause but nothing happens.
As mentioned by jwoods, I also have IE8 installed, though I only use it when a site won't work in SeaMonkey. Could this cause the Editor to not even begin the install?
And, as I have previously noted, the latest version of the Reader won't work either. Fortunately, version 2.5.214.2 Viewer works fine.

My attempts fail with either a "floating point" error message, or the "ended prematurely" error message (.MSI).

Hi guys,
jwoods - you mentioned that errors are generated? Could you send screen-shots of these?
br4 - is this the same for you? If so, could you also send screen-shots of these errors?

Re: FIND Not Working; Newest Version Won't Work
Hi,
I do not get any messages at all with the EXE file. After double clicking or highlighting it and then pressing Enter, I get a 1 or 2 second lag, but nothing related to the install attempt appears.
I just tried doing the install of the MSI file and did get an error box, which I'm attaching.* Hope this helps.
Many thanks for your support.
* I saved the image as a JPG and as a TIF and tried to add each (first the JPG and when that failed, the TIF), resulting in a message that the extensions are not allowed. To save time, what extension(s) for a picture is allowed? (The error box does not provide any definitive information as to why the install failed.)

Hi br4,
All images are disallowed due to.... inappropriate content postings.
You'll need to wrap the files in a ZIP folder or RAR/7Zip archive.

Attached, including two errors from the Event Log (computer and user name removed). Will - Tracker Supp wrote:Hi guys,

Cheers,
The EXE error occurred immediately after selecting language.
The 11708 event was thrown first by the MSI installer, then the 1033.
This happens whether security software is running, or off (incuding the services).
Have also done sfc /SCANNOW.

I also ran the MSI installer in a command prompt with logging turned on...
msiexec.exe /i PXCViewer_x86.msi /l* c:\MSI_Log.txt
The log (with computer and user name removed) is attached.

Re: FIND Not Working; Newest Version Won't Work
I rolled back to version 2.5.214.2 using the MSI and had no issues.
Since my Win XP SP3 machine is now a print server, I'm not too concerned about getting the newest version, but I would be interested in knowing why the installers (EXE and MSI) were failing.

Hi jwoods,
If you're happy to use the older build, then it may be best that we leave this for now. We have many features and bug fixes on fully supported operating systems that are currently taking priority. If this becomes more of an issue for yourself and/or for other clients, then it may be that we will then be able to look deeper into why this is happening.
